Getting your littles to sleep is never an easy task. Sometimes they sleep, others they don’t but the key is to find what works for you. One area that can help is the lighting levels in the room. The RMF team generally favoured pitch black for bedtimes. Lolly literally covers every possible light source to ensure Hector gets a good night sleep. I’ve done both. When the girls were tiny we attempted to keep the rooms really dark with blackout blinds and doors firmly closed. As they got a bit bigger we added various projectors and soothing friends and then now they are in and out of their own bed we like to make sure there is a little light on to avoid night time tumbles or falls down the stairs.
Molly has also become quite adamant that a light stays on (all night). I get told off in the morning if I’ve snuck up and turned it off. It also appears that she has developed a bit of night time worry as when I was putting her to bed she said ‘make sure you leave the light on so I can see if any tigers sneak in to my cupboard!’. Bless her.
Whether you favour the pitch black or a nightlight there is still a need for a bit of soft light in some capacity – from night feeds to calming stories. So we thought we’d share some of our favourite lights for children’s rooms to provide you with a bit of inspiration.
Gro Light
If you are after a simple night light for a nursery then the Gro Egg comes highly recommended. It also has a built in thermometer for checking the room’s temperature so you are crossing two nursery essentials off in one. Plus you can buy a variety of different toppers to turn it in to a cute animal friend.
Toadstool Lamp
This lovely little light gets switched on in Hector’s nursery after bath time. It lets out little streams of light so it’s a much gentler light and the perfect amount for ‘down time’.
Woodland Rabbit
How adorable. This little rabbit lets out a really soft glow, Molly seemed to like it and it’s an absolute steal at £4.95. It’s also battery operated in case your little ones bed isn’t close to a plug socket. If you prefer a plug in light then This Modern Life also have the adorable ceramic rabbit version.
Miffy
I have coveted this Miffy floor lamp for Molly’s room for a long time now but always been a bit put off by the price. One day it may well get purchased though and I really probably should buy it whilst she is still small. Well that’s what I’ll tell the husband!!
Slumber Buddy
Both Becky and I had slumber buddy’s. Molly had a turtle and Becky has really enjoyed having the elephant slumber buddy in Leo’s room. The light reflects stars, planets and the moon onto the ceiling. You can set the colours to change or to stay on one of 3 colours. You can also choose to have lullabies playing too… although Becky always thought the quietest setting was a bit loud but it was comforting up until a certain point. That point being when Leo figured out he could change the music and then it just became an additional distraction, but great up until that point!
Ewan The Dream Sheep
A lot of mums rave about Ewan! The cute little sheep includes actual womb and heartbeat recordings to calm babies and toddlers, helping them go to sleep. It also has a soothing pink glow which gives a reassuring glimmer of light as littles drift off to sleep.
Mood light
This cute light comes in either a dog, cat or bear. The light slowly changes colour and is wireless so can sit anywhere. It’s 20cm tall so it will sit substantially in the nursery and make a lovely addition in the day time too as it’s white when not lit.
The White Company
The White Company have some really fun bedside lights that would be ideal in a nursery or children’s room. I love this cute aeroplane design (it’s currently in the sale too) but there is also a pirate ship or castle to choose from. These are a bit more pricey but I’m confident the littles will love them.
Clouds
Ikea can always be relied on for some great value lighting options. This cloud ceiling light is really fun and a bargain at £14. It comes in a variety of colours and there is also a matching table lamp available. It casts sweet little cloud patterns on to the walls which is sure to be a winner.
Deer
I’m a big fan of Ferm Living for everything from their fabulous wallpapers to cute cushions. This deer wall light is so adorable and with a soft bulb it would be ideal for story time or middle of the night feeds when they are little. I love the wood but they also come in a range of colours including the softest mint green. If you love this you should also have a peek at the other designs. There is a tree, a fox and a car amongst others.
So there are our favourites. The question is do you keep a little light in the room or prefer the pitch black to get your little’s to sleep?
Aargh the miffy light!!! I want it in my room, never mind little O’s! I have it bookmarked on so many websites in case it gets miraculously reduced…
This is a timely post for me as we’re getting to the stage of taking the sides off the cot and trying to get a nice dim night time routine of stories then drifting off to sleep. Haha! I’ve been looking for lights that give off enough light for reading a story but that are dim enough that she doesn’t think it’s still play time.
Considering getting one of those lightbox with letters on it (but is that more for me too??) but these options have given me more to think about!! Thank you!
Glad to be of help Fiona! Yep, the Miffy light is rather lovely isn’t it and I too am probably choosing it as I love it too! Oops. Have a little look at the ceramic Rabbit light on This Modern Life. It’s super cute and a good price. http://thismodernlife.co.uk/products/lamp-lapin-bunny-rabbit-white. too I have one of the lighboxes at home and they are quite dim so can recommend that. Good luck with taking the sides off. We did it last weekend on Alice’s cot and so far so good. She has’t got out once which is in complete contrast to how Molly was. Hope it goes well! x
Have you ladies seen the new cloud lamps from Little Lovely Company? They go on pre-order at some point today on This Modern Life – I’ve been working myself up into a mild crush throughout the Instagram build up. Their mini pear lights are adorable too… https://www.instagram.com/p/BA0SaqQwbh-/?taken-by=thismodernlife xx
I spied these on the This Modern Life instagram feed last night Karen. LOVE. I have been checking all morning but they aren’t there yet. Love the pear one. I fear I may be spending too much today. Maybe I can justify it as research for the blog! x
They’re too fab aren’t they? Well, I’ve just seen in the comments… they go on at 11! Apparently the bigger version is coming in around another month from now, but if we get the small version, surely that’s more economical… and the more we spend, we’ll save on postage… and… and… all the reasons.
Let’s just do it! xx
Oh no Karen. Just seen them all. I need the cloud, the cookie, the milk and the pineapple. And then probably the watermelon shelf and the lolly wall hooks too! I am about to redecorate Alice’s room so think this may be a good starting point. Absolutely no idea what that theme is but heck, it doesn’t matter! x
Haha I’m trying to restrain myself until we’ve decorated and know nore about our future little ones (the joys of the adoption journey) so I just ordered the cloud & crossed my fingers that I’m not putting the mockers on anything 🙂 x
You are most definitely not. You can pretend it is for your bathroom or something for now if you want to! xx
Oh we have a slumber buddy too! Hector loves clicking the buttons more than anything though and just recently I’ve been hiding it at the bottom of his basket of toys to prevent any distractions before bedtime. We love our toadstool lamp though; definitely worth every penny!
I love the toadstool lamp! Quick question- Is it more of a dim night light or a brighter lamp? I need a lamp that is bright enough to see my book during night feeds!
Oh these are all lovely! I really, really like the deer wall light – we just bought a badger felt rug for the nursery (http://www.made.com/collection/pipkin-collection/pipkin-badger-shaped-felt-rug) so I think a woodlands/animal theme is definitely in the making! The toadstool looks lovely, too – so many choices… 🙂
Oh I love the badger rug. Woodland theme’s are the best! x
Oh Miffy, how I love you! I so wish I could justify the expense, but even if I could fool myself into believing we NEED it, I think it would result in divorce. 🙂
Also, didn’t realise Ewan came in grey and now I want to change our blue version…
Ha ha, I know. My husband said we should buy it then looked at the price!! The grey Ewan is a new addition. So much nicer I think xx
I am the same about the Miffy light…. in love with it but always put off by the price but determined to get it one day!!
I found this nightlight yesterday and I have again fallen in love. It is a snowglobe but it doesn’t need shaking, the glitter spins on it’s own and the light changes colour!! I love it!!

That is the cutest. Thanks for the link! xx
Am I allowed the deer light even if I don’t have littles? It’s adorable! x
Of course! I also think it would look rather nice in my snug! x
Love all the lights especially the toadstool, still deciding on which colour so haven’t managed to buy one yet plus in the back of my mind is the Miffy lamp!!!!
Quick question re taking cot side away, is this in preparation for a big bed or do you have cot beds?? Tabitha is almost 3 and still happy in her cot but getting a little big so we’ve been thinking about moving her to a big girl bed but don’t want to do too much change at once as she’s just started preschool.
Everyone loves Miffy!! Alice has a cot bed so we have just turned it in to a mini bed for her. She’s quite tall so soon we will probably go to a single bed but she seems to like this one for now. We didn’t really need to move her from her cot (cotbed with sides) in truth but my husband was adamant she would climb out. They do adapt rather well I think but if she’s happy keep her in her cot. A lot easier for you!! xx
Eeekkkkk, I’ve been waiting for the clouds etc. to become available, I’ve been following This Modern Life too and showed my daughter, she was very excited although I’m not sure who was more excited me or her, decisions decisions, I want to buy them ALL!!
I love the Miffy one too and was adamant was going to buy it until I saw the price, I think my husband would have a fit if I did 🙁
We currently have the little rabbit which she loves, then a string of ball lights around her wardrobe, a pirate ship on her wall which has little lights throughout and a globe which lights up too. Yes I might have a slight addiction to lights! Obviously I don’t put them all on at the same time…….!
This is the globe, we are getting her interested in the world and travelling!

Hmm off to check out TML, I also want one of those A4 light boxes!! Heaven help me!!
xx
Ooops, sorry for feeding your light obsession even more! I could have put so many in to this post but tried to restrict it. There are just too many amazing lights at the moment. I think the RMF community will be buying up all the TML lights tonight! x
Haha don’t worry Lottie, I don’t need much encouragement as my husband would attest to!! 🙂 Yes I think so, Isabella has already categorically told me she ‘needs’ the cloud light……xx
