I have never been a big makeup person (shock horror working here!), nor has my hair ever been finely coiffured BUT I think I’ve gone a bit too far the other way.
Last week I dropped the girls at school before dashing down to London for a meeting and the reaction of everyone made me stop and think that perhaps I’ve let myself go. I had on a skirt (an absolute bargain from New Look that I am now buying in EVERY colour), had done my makeup and even styled my hair. I didn’t exactly look swish but I looked a lot better than the jeans and scraped back hair combo that I’m normally rocking. Coo’s of ‘ooh, you look nice’ and ‘going somewhere special?’ had me cringing inside.
Now I’m not that bothered what people think of me. I don’t exactly look a complete state, so I hope, but I do think perhaps a dash of makeup and a quick hairbrush may be in order. Clothes wise I’ve got back on track with some lovely new purchases but I seem to have forgotten how much a quick splash of makeup helps me. I’m pretty lucky that I have good skin so I’ve never had the need for a lot of makeup. However, some concealer does wonders for my dark eyes which have unsurprisingly got worse in recent years. I’m currently favouring the Bobby Brown Serum duo which seems to be working miracles. You might need it.
The problem is I just can’t be bothered!! I don’t really like wearing makeup as it irritates my eyes by the end of the day. I’ve started to worry that perhaps the reason my eyes hurt at the end of the day is because my makeup is sooooooo old. I just don’t use it enough to get through anything. I only ever really wear eye makeup and a spot of blush anyway and I’ve never done the whole foundation malarkey so getting ready takes me about 2 minutes. When you aren’t going anywhere though it just doesn’t seem worth it to me. When I worked in an office I had to get ready each day and that made me do it. I didn’t necessarily do much with my hair. It was normally scraped back straight from the gym in the morning but at least I looked presentable. But now I work from home the only time I wear makeup is if I’m heading to a meeting or going out out. Which is a rare occurance. I rarely wear makeup any other time. Even going out in public to the shops doesn’t seem to get me reaching for the masacara. In short, I’ve stopped making an effort.
I can’t pinpoint exactly when it happened but I’m guessing it coincided with the arrival of Alice. Two under two meant little time to sort myself out. It was hard enough to wash my hair, let alone blow dry it.
I see all these other mums with their perfectly made up faces and immaculate hair and I feel a little jealous. And confused. How on earth do they have time to get ready themselves in the morning? Maybe I just need to get up earlier.
So in a similar fashion to finding my style again I’m going to give myself a proverbial kick up the backside and start getting my face ready. I can’t promise it will be every day but I will try. Even if it’s just for a trip to Waitrose.
Over the coming weeks I’m going to restock my makeup cabinet and will share all my finds with you in order to create the ultimate easy peasy every day style. Has anyone got any failsafe makeup items I should be buying? I’m after some quick items that require little time and effort. Also, any sensitive eye makeup suggestions would be most welcome.
And finally, how do you all get your face ready in the mornings? Are you like me and have embraced the ‘Natural’ look or is your lippy an essential part of your daily routine?
Lottie I 100% am not blowing smoke up you when I say you are naturally beautiful and damn stylish. Look at your home. Look at your writing. Look at your cakes. So many people are probably super jealous of your taste and style.
If you prefer not to do make up daily, if it doesn’t give you pleasure, if it is uncomfortable or sore, then that’s you and that’s fine. Some people get great joy from hair and make up as a daily activity. Some don’t. And that’s totally ok either way. It’s like anything- running or playing music or photography or reading- if it’s your thing then great. If not, that’s cool too. Just because it’s linked to social expectations of femininity and beauty doesn’t make it any different.
Steps off soapbox, asks if you’ve tried Bare Minerals foundation? I love it it’s so quick and easy to apply and gives brilliant finish. When I say quick I mean about 90 seconds with a brush. That, one stroke of bronze per cheek, a speedy mascara and a slick of gloss and I’m done. Not daily but for a Saturday with a little time and somewhere to go…
Also sure you know this but could you hit up feelunique.com ? No perfume sample attacks, no scary salespeople. Just you and bargain top brand make up- including the aforesaid Bare Minerals foundation.
Or could you go shopping with a certain Mrs O’Shea? I think RMLtd could 100% auction a shopping trip with Charlotte, ideal make up guru. Christmas raffle?
Ps I won the make up pictured about a year ago from you, it’s been brilliant! Thanks again all.
Until about 6 months ago I would have agreed with you on the bare minerals foundation but since having baby number 2 I’ve found that it sits really patchily on my face 🙁 I love a powder foundation and I’m extremely upset.
Oh Lucy, you have made my day. Such a lovely lovely comment. I love you guys! I will admit that I am currently sat here after having done the school run with zero makeup and rather dodgy hair. In my defence yesterday our gas went off so I’ve had no hot water and a cold shower was not appealing. I shall make more of an effort for pick up!
I have heard good things about Bare Minerals so must take a peek. And yes, Charlotte is always telling me things I need to purchase so I’m pretty sure if we hit the makeup counters I would be spending a fortune! I’ve told her all about your idea for a Christmas competition. Excellent plan! Yay to winning prizes. Glad they have come in handy xxx
Aussie dry shampoo is your new best friend in the boiler situation…
Off out to the supermarket pronto! Thankfully we should be back up and running shortly. Hoorah! x
I think we could be make up twins Lottie…or no make up twins to be more precise. I also never use up any products and dread to think how old my mascara is. My favourite part about not wearing makeup is that I don’t have to remove it in the evening…the ultimate laziness I know. Unlike you though when I do make the effort for my weekly office trip most people don’t think I’m wearing anything anyway – I guess I do prefer the natural look and clearly remember my wedding makeup artist’s despair when I got her to redo my look three times until you could barely see any eye shadow. My latest secret weapon is bright lipstick – maximum impact with minimum effort and even I like how polished it makes me look. I will be following your makeup cabinet restock with much interest but rocking the all natural look is pretty cool too x
Hello Twinny! That is a definite plus point I must admit. Very little in the way of nighttime routine is required. I too favour the natural look and my daytime makeup is pretty much the same as my going out/occasion makeup. I’m sure in my earlier years I used to have a rather random selection of eye colours/glitter (it was the 90’s) but now I favour a good Bobby Brown palette. Excellent tip on the bright lip. This summer I’ve had a nice coral shade and it has made me realise I need a few more colours. It instantly makes me feel brighter. Best get practising my makeup now then for some tutorials xx
Or if you are really slummy (can I really admit this?!!) you don’t take it off at night anyway?! I remove my makeup every morning (before reapplying) and fully (mascara etc) every 2-3 days. Now that I write that it sounds awful. I promise it really isn’t!! I only wear a tinted moisturiser and a tiny bit of blush and mascara, which I used to take off every night but since having a baby quite frankly I can’t be bothered (and my skin seems none the worse at the moment). I touch up the mascara in the morning a tiny bit but properly remove it and moisturise my face properly etc every time I wash my hair, mainly because I use an oil cleanser and if I used that daily my hair would need washing daily and I don’t have the time or the energy to do that!
I am really similar Lottie! I actually want to make the effort but never seem to have time but I think this is because 1. I have never got into a routine with it & 2. I never really learnt how to ‘do’ make-up properly (which sounds ridiculous at 36 I know!). When I do put some on I always feel very over made up because I don’t normally wear it so looking forward to the make-up suggestions 🙂
I am the same Lottie! Not really wearing much make-up as it’s hard to get the time! However when I do I have a few quick favourites! Shu Uemura cream eyeshadow, ysl foundation touch d’eclat (looks very natural as it is not thick like others), and body shop vitamin C spray, for a quick refresh! Look forward to reading about your finds!
Loving the sounds of the vitamin c spray. I must go and add this to my list. xxx
I’m totally in the NO make-up club. Only when I’m going out out. And often that doesn’t include dinner party’s.
Everyone I know is so used to that just being the way I look I don’t think anyone cares.
But I’ve always thought if I were rich I’d absolutely love to have someone do my hair and makeup for me all the time!!!
I like how it looks but if it’s a choice of bed or makeup. Bed always wins!!!
I am secretly hoping though with the recent production of daughter number two, that one of them will be amazing with hair and makeup and get me ready every morning!!! Hehehe
Child beauty labours ok isn’t it ?
Of course Amanda. Molly is actually the one who prompts me to remember to actually get myself ready. She is such a girly girl. She hasn’t quite mastered the hair do’s yet but I’ll work on it. Oh to have a personal hair and makeup artist on hand the whole time. xxx
I’m so with you Lottie. I’ve never been overly bothered with make-up and to be completely honest I really don’t think I look that different wearing it. Since having a baby 6 weeks ago I put mascara on twice ?. I do love a bright lippie and a bit of rouge though!
I think you may be doing better than me with twice in six weeks Maike!! But so with you on the bright lips, I’m a convert xxx
I’m not big on make up either:- feel very done up if I have eye shadow on! But I do love a good concealer – The Balm ‘Time Balm’ to be specific! Its got great coverage for those dark circles and is meant to have anti-wrinkle properties and “is infused with Vitamins A, C, E and Panthenol”. I LOVE this and its pretty much the only thing I use on my face…besides a very quick swipe with L’Oreal Nude Magique BB blush and a Boots Natural Collection mascara (as per Mrs O’Shea’s recommendation!). On days I don’t have much to do or not many plans to leave the house I just have Olay Complete Care (sensitive) moisturiser on! I have recently discovered a new face mask from Garnier- Moisture Bomb tissue mask. It’s BRILLIANT! I use one once a week and it has made a big difference to my skin 😀
Good luck with the new make up search – main thing is you feel comfortable, no point in wearing anything if you’re not comfortable with it!
Must check out the Time Balm, it sounds fab. Anything with added benefits is a winner with me xx
Hmmm, I’m pretty minimal with my beauty prep pre-baby so no idea what I’ll be like come December.
Hair wise, I brush it through when wet and that is it.
Makeup consists of a smidge of foundation, some under eye concealer and a bit of blush. This takes approximately 60seconds but is essential as with uber-pale skin and the darkest under eyes…people get genuinely concerned for my health if I go barefaced. (My MiL actually thought I had two black eyes when she saw me sans slap…!)
Um, I also pretty much brush my hair when wet too! Got to love the MIL to tell it like it is!! I often get told I look rather tired. Um, I am! xx
You sound similar to me, as long as my faint and patchy eyebrows are filled in I’m okay with little to no make up. I can’t remember the last time I used proper foundation, I generally use the clinique chubby in the nude stick for my blemished chin and to perk up my under eyes. If I have the time and inclination I might slick on some mascara and blusher. I hate taking it off so try not to put it on!
