First up, I probably should have got Edd to write this review given that he researched, purchased and ultimately uses the child carrier the most but rest assured I’ve picked his brains well!
I can highly recommend a more robust child carrier for once your baby is a bit bigger and when you are out and about. If you were a fan of the Baby Bjorns or similar then you will definitely appreciate the freedom these give you. We opted for the Osprey Poco Carrier in their Premium design. I was dubious to start with about how much we would use it. I mean who wants to carry a three year old on their back? I also didn’t think we needed to spend that money when we had a buggy. I was soon proved wrong. It has been invaluable and the girls adored going in the carrier. Being up high and seeing everything going on must have been so much fun. It also provided hours of entertainment hitting Daddy’s head or stealing his sunglasses. Be warned!
{Why We Chose The Osprey Poco Carrier}
Edd never really liked pushing the buggy, he still doesn’t, and was adamant we needed a baby carrier for Molly. We had never had a sling or baby carrier when she was little but as she got older we began to see the benefit of a ‘backpack’ style carrier that we could use when out and about. On that note if you are looking for a newborn baby carrier do check out our post on this from a while back where there were lots of lovely suggestions.
Edd initially began the search when we were heading off to Devon as we knew there would be lots of walking to the beach and Molly’s little legs weren’t going to make it that far. We also needed something for general days out and just walking. Over the years it has been everywhere from the beach to the Safari Park and pretty much everywhere in between.
Edd has had quite a few of the Osprey backpacks himself in the past so was a brand he knew and trusted for their quality. He also did a lot of research and this came up trumps for all the kit he was after. It also got excellent reviews for comfort and as he was going to be doing most of the wearing I let him decide.
I will add here that most reviews of this product started with ‘If you are an outdoorsy family then this is great’ or something to that effect. I will state that you don’t need to be outdoorsy to benefit from this. Yes, you aren’t going to use it sat in the lounge but you equally don’t need to be hiking mountains every weekend. Edd would always reach for the carrier if we were popping to the park or even to the shops. He much preferred it to negotiating a pram round where we were going.
We opted for the Premium carrier which had additional features and benefits that we thought would be useful.
{The Details}
The carrier is suitable for babies from 16lb (7kg) as long as they can hold their head up. It can carry up to 48lb (about 22kg) so will last you for a very long time.
There are three different carriers in the Poco range; Poco, Poco Plus and Poco Premium.
The child safety harness, seat and foot stirrups are also adjustable to fit a wide range of child sizes, shapes and weights. Child safety is at the forefront of the design and this product has the TÜV GS safety certification. The framing around the child is fully padded for comfort and protection.
It is fully adjustable for the adult with adjustable hip belt and shoulder straps to get the perfect fit.
It has mesh sides and inlays to allow for air flow and ventilation.
The rapid deploy Poco Sun-Shade, with an SPF50 rating it protects from harmful sun rays and there is also an the integrated raincover to protect your little one from heavy rainfall.
{What We Liked}
Most importantly the girl’s loved it. They thought it was so much fun and even when Alice could only say a few words she would request ‘Backpack’ all the time. They were just so excited every time they were swung up on Daddy’s back.
It is extremely comfortable, or as comfortable as carrying a small person can be, and has great support to help distribute the weight across your shoulders and hips.
The adjustable straps meant it was easy to get the fit and balance right when wearing it. It is also really quick to adjust the different elements so if I did ever feel strong enough to carry it myself it was simple to swap the carrier between Edd and I mid walk.
Likewise it was easy to get the girls in and out and adjust the straps and even the seat width to ensure they are secure. The shoulder straps are adjusted at their shoulder so there is no struggling to get at them like on other carriers we tried. It has an amazing torso length adjuster which means you can ensure they are sat at exactly the right height at all times. There are also little foot stirrups for when they get older.
It is packed full of storage with pockets and a huge space underneath for storing all manner or spare clothes, snacks and general paraphernalia. Excellent for those beach picnics and suncreams. Do be aware though that the more you add the heavier it gets! The new versions have a detachable rucksack too.
The stand was also so useful. You just flick the bar out at the base and you can rest it easily which makes getting children in and out so much easier. It then just folds back in when you are off on your way.
The handy sunshade was brilliant. It just pulls out of a tiny zip and pops up like some clever piece of engineering. Excellent for when you are out and about on hot days. The new version has a rain cover in the same style.
The carrier also folds up pretty flat which is brilliant when you want to squeeze it in the car or find a cupboard for storing it at home.
Crucially it feels very safe. The safety harness is easy to use and very substantial compared to some others we had seen. Overall it is robust and I never had any worries about the girls being loose or moving about.
{What We Didn’t Like}
When we purchased the carrier it didn’t come with an integrated rain cover. Not ideal in the Great British outdoors where rain is a constant feature. We would often end up putting up the sunshade as a cover for light showers. I’m pleased to say that this seems to have been rectified and the Osprey Poco Premium now comes with a rain cover.
I personally found it quite difficult to get on without someone there to help me. I guess this is the same for a lot of carriers. It does have two handles so that you can sort of swing it around and lift it up which got harder as they got older. Edd on the other hand had no issue and swung them round in a fluid easy movement that they laughed hilariously at!
The only other downside was the price. It isn’t cheap but I can hand on heart say it was worth it. I might have gulped a lot when Edd first bought it saying we wouldn’t use it enough but we have. Cost per use is pennies.
{Would We Buy It Again?}
Most definitely. I only wish we had bought it sooner as it would have come in really handy when Molly was younger and even more so when we first had Alice and I was trying to juggle a pram and my Baby Bjorn carrier.
So that’s it. Hope it was helpful for anyone considering buying a carrier. Do any of you have a child carrier and what brand did you opt for? It would be great to hear some more recommendations.
Oh I never knew of this brand for carriers! When we bought ours we just went for the Littlelife one as there seemed to be so many to choose from and I was already familiar with their products. We love ours too, use it loads (well, like you it’s more of a dad thing) and Fern really enjoys being in it. Ours seems to have the same pros and cons as yours so I reckon they must be universal in that respect. I too wish we’d had it earlier as our much loved Ergo 360 was used well beyond comfortable carrying.
I was worried this type of carrier would be cumbersome and heavy but it’s really not. I too find it tricky to get on/off alone but you always manage somehow don’t you?! (Mum mantra – manage somehow!) I’m glad we got one with decent storage as we can fit all the toddler paraphernalia in without needing an extra bag.
I would definitely recommend anyone considering a carrier like this to just buy it now and think later!
My brother in law had the little life one and they loved it. I’m glad to hear it has similar pro’s and con’s. As you say I think a lot are really similar so it’s worth looking around to find one you like, is a good price and feels comfortable on. Loving the mum mantra too. So true. And yes, you definitely need all the storage you can get!! xx
We’ve got this carrier and I would recommend it to anyone. My father in law does lots of walking (like across Scotland with only a tent for two weeks kind of walking) and he also loves wearing it. Best money we ever spent!! In our experience, you definitely get what you pay for when it comes to carriers.
Excellent to hear it stands up to proper pro hiking/walking. I think that is why Edd bought it as he had visions of doing this sort of thing. Needless to say we haven’t yet! xxx
We have a “vintage” Karrimor one that was used by my parents for my brothers in the 90s! It’s brilliant, balances well, really comfortable for everyone! My cousin liked it so much she bought one for her girls off eBay! It was the perfect next step from our Ergo.
I do love Osprey though. They do the best large backpacks for travelling, which you can pack like a hold-all. Brilliant in those long ago days before multiple stops around a country became scary visions of toddler drama…
Love a bit of vintage. We actually got given an old one by a neighbour originally whilst we decided. Problem is it was so old that I don’t think safety straps had been invented then. Kind of just sit in the seat and away you go! Molly did love it though as her first experience of a carrier and it really helped us decide we wanted one. I’m all for ebay or gumtree to get a bargain. I got our Baby Bjorn on Gumtree for a bargain £25. It had only been used a handful of times and was in amazing condition. Edd has a few of the Osprey backpacks and he loves them. They are like Mary Poppins bags! xx
Also, Lottie, Edd’s muscles in that last picture ??
(Inappropriate much by me…?!?!)
Ha ha ha! Love this. Giant muscles are a hangover from his rugby days. Although he no longer plays they are excellent for carrying the girls! xxx
We have the Little life too and it’s been used to death already. Originally we had a soft carrier and then an Ergo 360 when our daughter was a bit younger, but the Little life has got through walking holidays, national trust visits, walks/hikes and even shopping trips. Storage is good, you can get a delegate sun/rain attachment thingy too.
Separate rather than delegate!!
The Little Life was definitely up there with our considerations as we only heard good things about it. Glad to hear we aren’t the only one who used it for shopping! x
Really helpful thank you – this one has been on our shortlist so may have to bite the bullet and buy in time for spring. One question – I’m quite petite (height wise and also narrow shoulders) – do you (or any other readers!) know if it would be okay for me to carry? One downside of our ergobaby is I find sometimes the shoulder straps end up slipping down which makes it less comfortable. Thank you!
Glad to be of help. This has a strap across the chest from each of the shoulder straps so you can do that up and tighten it which should stop the shoulder straps falling down. Height wise you would just need to shorten the shoulder straps so that it all sits in the right places on your hips I think. It might be worth trying to see if you can find one in a store anywhere to try although I think with all the adjustments you would be fine. xx
Thanks Lottie ?
Very useful post! We currently have the Ergo (never got on with the Baby Björn) but I’m. It sure how long it will really last us. This gives me some great options for further research ?
Get yourselves soft structured carriers people! For £100 you get something that is SO much more comfortable for baby and parent, can carry up to a sizeable toddler! Have a look at Tula, Ergo, Manduca. Much nicer than framed carriers and you can hire them from local sling libraries for a few pounds a week. #justsaying
Becca, I want a soft sling for my baby, particularly to wear as a newborn. When is a good time to go to a sling library? Before baby comes or after?
Simple answer: get a stretchy wrap or close caboo before baby is born, you can use them from birth until they become too heavy for you sobits a great starter. When you need something more structured go to a sling library x
Thanks!
We bought a Deuter one from John Lewis just Christmas as it seemed like a complete bargain- it was only £110 but the same one is now £180, so I think it was wrongly priced somewhere along the line. I looked at this Osprey one as well but decided it was just a bit too pricey.
We took it to Switzerland for a weeks holiday at new year and it was great for mountain walks, and round town. Everyone there also had Deuter ones so I’m guessing it’s the ‘in’ European brand. Definitely helpful to a storage bag as we didn’t need an extra backpack which is the case with Ergo & Beco.
I have a lot of love for my Ergo and Beco carriers, but my husband doesn’t, so it will ensure that all small person carrying doesn’t fall to me.
Liz we have a Deuter one too (Kid Comfort 2 I think) which we got in John Lewis for either £90 or £110 I can’t remember. The sales assistant was looking to see what was in stock in the warehouse at the store and for some reason the red version was massively reduced so we went with that!!! Felix is almost 18 moths and we’ve been using it for almost a year he loves it.
The storage on it is pretty good too.
We have a Osprey Pocco too (my husband works for a outdoors equipment company so we got it during a sample sale and he assures me it’s the carrier they sell the most of) we haven’t used it yet on Franklin as he’s only just 6 months and it’s still in the attic, but it’ll be coming out very soon for dog walks, park trips and beach hikes etc. I tried it on with no baby in though and it’s comfortable to wear and easy to set up. Fingers crossed it will be just as good when my big bruiser of a boy is onboard!
Great to hear you like it too Alice and hopefully Franklin will be enjoying his trips out in it soon. Also, love a sample sale! xx
This definitely looks like one to check out when/if we move on from the baby bjorn. It’s funny that in our house it’s me now that uses the carrier more often, whilst my husband defaults to the pram. But then I guess that I’m the one with the slightly more outdoorsy bent!
I have one of the tiny Osprey backpacks – bought for when I was trying to run my commute – and I agree that they are a bit like Mary Poppins bags (and all the external storage extras on mine are fab). I love it.
Nice foto`s, Nice article
