Just a quick good morning from me here as I’m handing over to our lovely Lisa from Rock My Style to give you a bit of an update on her pregnancy. It’s flying by!
Hi, lovely RMF readers. I thought it was about time that I gave you an update on life as a pregnant lady.
I’m currently 34 weeks pregnant and until last week I was feeling on top of the world. Tired, yes, out-of-breath, yes, but generally in really good health. Over Christmas everyone in our family came down with a horrible virus, everyone that is, except me. I was so smug. However karma bit me on the bum because last week I came down with the flu.
It all started off with Lyra suffering from the same thing. On Sunday she was feverish and at about 3am became hysterical and hallucinating, shouting ‘Get it away’ at things which weren’t there which was really scary. Then on the Tuesday I too started to feel rough, and by Wednesday I was pretty much bed bound. I got all in a tizz because I googled ‘flu in pregnancy’ which led me to horror stories about developmental issues with the baby and a doctor’s appointment sharpish. I then sat crying to a poor young male junior doctor trying to explain how I felt sweaty but shivery and my skin felt sensitive and achy and how I was Just. So. Tired.
He sent me home and told me to rest and have fluids and paracetamol which is all very well and good, but also hard to remember/put into place when you’ve got a poorly two year old on your hands.
And things went from bad to worse on Thursday. I dragged myself to my midwife’s appointment and when she was checking the baby’s heartbeat she seemed to be listening in for longer than usual, and didn’t even raise a smile when Lyra commented that it sounded like a unicorn galloping. She then explained that because baby’s heartbeat was faster than it should have been I would have to go into hospital to be monitored. To say I was terrified may sound like an overreaction however as I’m sure you mamas can appreciate, all you want is for your baby to be healthy and happy. It is so hard to hear that your baby might be suffering and there’s nothing you can do. I felt so guilty for not following the doctor’s advice and foolishly hadn’t thought how me not resting and not having lots of fluids could impact on the baby.
Thankfully, after being monitored in hospital, the midwife and the doctor reassured me that his heartbeat seemed to have stabilised and that I was ok to go home. I could have cried with relief and since then have drunk more Lucozade than I have in a lifetime. I’m definitely on the mend and baby boy’s kicks tell me he seems to be doing ok too.
How are you pregnant ladies getting on? I hope you are all getting in as much rest as possible x
Oh how scary it must have been! Flu is awful- I had it in my first pregnancy and was so unwell. And I didn’t have a toddler to contend with! Glad you are feeling better and little man (I totally forgot you knew he was a he!!) is a ok.
Enjoy the last bit, you know this part is the most fun… ha. I’m 39 weeks tomorrow and the size and temperament of an orca… an International Women’s Day babe would be great today please universe! xxx
I didn’t realise how awful flu could be 🙁 and that has been one of the hardest things, not being able to give poor Lyra the attention she deserves!
Everything crossed for an International Women’s Day baby for you x
31 weeks tomorrow and am still (thankfully) feeling okay. It’s hard to believe that this time last year I was tapering my marathon training when this year my legs are like jelly at the top of a stairs! Baby (sex unknown) is wiggling away and consistently measuring two weeks ahead – uh oh 🙂 I’m busy purchasing all the “to buy” items on my ever growing baby shopping list. Seven weeks left at work and not sure how I’m going to get everything done. Oh, and we’re about to start on a kitchen renovation……may as well start the mayhem before the baby arrives!!
What a difference a year makes! Good luck with the kitchen renovation, how lovely that you’ll have a sparkly new kitchen when baby arrives, but do try and get some rest too! X
Glad you’re feeling better Lisa, good luck with the last few weeks! X
Thanks Lucy ?
Oh no, how scary! So glad to hear you’re on the mend. 34 weeks eek! I’m now 19 weeks and just starting to feel better after terrible headaches the first few months. If only my 18 month old would let me have a lie in….Next week is our 20 week scan so very nervous and excited over here 🙂
Really scary 🙁
I have suffered bad headaches as a lovely side effect of this flu – had to crawl back into bed this morning after dropping Lyra at nursery because of one – so you have my sympathies Anna! However glad to hear you’re starting to feel better. Roll on your second trimester and hopefully some lie ins x
Oh Lisa, that must have been awful, I hope you’re all feeling much better now.
I’m 22 weeks now with my second. My first pregnancy was pretty easy – I was running and gyming into my 8th month, but I have had terrible back pain this pregnancy.
We managed a toddler free break to Venice last week – a last hurrah before baby 2 arrives – and I was nearly in tears at some points, my back was hurting so much. I’m not sure if back pain is meant to be worse the second time around, if it is to do with the way the baby is lying, or if it is exacerbated by picking a toddler up constantly, but interested to know if anyone else has suffered or if there’s any quick fixes?
Hi Cat, this sounds so similar to me (I’m 26 weeks with my first) – we went to Stockholm a few weekends ago and walked a paltry 8km and after that I could barely walk into the lift at our hotel. I was so upset!
I’ve been referred to the physio by my midwife, and she’s given me some exercises to do, a support belt (sexy… not) and sent me off for hydrotherapy – I’d really recommend telling your midwife and seeing if you can get referred. Just in case they can do something. She also said to do my pelvic floors religiously and stop crossing my legs… both difficult to remember to do!
No quick fixes though, sorry! Although pregnancy yoga has really helped me too… xx
My SPD/PGP went away for a bit but just seems to have returned. Very achy hips! Definitely second the support belt, so good for longer walks (ie over 5 minutes!). Just need to remember not to cross my legs though – it’s so hard to sit/lie comfortably.
Totally agree with Katie G.
I asked for a physio referral and at 29 weeks it couldn’t have come at a better time! Simple things like learning how to avoid using stomach muscles can help to strengthen those pesky hips.
The physio did say don’t expect pregnancy to be pain free but to recognise when the pain you’re experiencing is not normal.
Definitely get yourself on the list and let the midwife know asap! <3
Yuck…poor you. And what a shame that you were suffering in Venice too. When I was pregnant with Lyra I had quite a bit of back pain and I used to make Rich give me back massages which did help.
I don’t know if you’re anywhere near Warwick but I went to see an osteopath when my back pain still hadn’t gone after having Lyra:

Emma was amazing and it looks from her website like she treats pregnant women too x
That must have been so scary for you Lisa, hope you’re feeling more yourself now xx I’m now 24 weeks and starting to get back pain and sciatica in my right leg, which is making it interesting to sleep at night!!!! I had Norovirus at about week 6/7 of my pregnancy, I got it from my sister & her children & the rest of my family couldn’t understand why I didn’t bounce back as quickly as them! I wonder why!!
Thanks Jenna x
Gosh the things us women have to put up with eh?! Norovirus is horrendous, and you’re right, bouncing back from anything whilst pregnant is just completely different. Hope you get some sleep tonight! – Have you tried a pregnancy pillow or sleeping with a pillow between your legs/under your bump? x
Glad you’re better Lisa! I’m also 34 weeks… just want to get it over and done with now! Race you to the finish! ?
This time around I’m trying hypnobirthing after a fairly horrid back to back labour with baby no 1… Although I’m consultant led i’m hoping for a calmer birth this time!! Though I’m happy for ALLLLL the drugs needed. I think (hope) there’s a happy balance … whatever it takes to get this baby out safely
How are you finding hypnobirthing? It’s so flipping expensive!! I just don’t know if we can afford to take the plunge but it sounds like something I would be interested in!
I bought a load of CDs second hand… for the princely sum of £7, they stopped the awful nightmares I was having about my first labour and were brilliantly relaxing. Worth a go?
Two of my friends also used the CDs and swore by them x
Haven’t started yet, nothing like leaving it last minute! It isn’t cheap, though we’re doing it with a teacher we know and a condensed tailored course. To be honest, if something can help better my experience from last time or at least stop me panicking then to me it’s worth it. Definitely beans on toast for a while!
I’m 29 weeks pregnant and have been reading the Mindful Hypnobirthing book and listening to the various downloads that come with it and I can highly recommend them! I didn’t fancy going to a specific class or paying for 1-2-1 classes and this has really changed my outlook on labour and made me feel a lot calmer about the whole thing. Would definitely suggest getting the book in the first instance and see how you go! x
Hooray for Easter babies Victoria 🙂
Rich’s mum always tells Rich and I about how he was back to back and it sounds so painful.
Yup I too am trying to remain open minded about the drugs that might be required. You have hit the nail on the head when you say it is just about getting the baby out safely x
Glad you are feeling better Lisa. I’m nearly 31 weeks and feel like baby is trying to escape through my ribs! Think we should probably buy a couple of things for this baby now… Hope the next few weeks go well for you.
Thanks Jools! Ha ha yes I’m with you on the should-probably-be-buying-stuff-for-the-baby front. I’ve got a lot of cute cushions for this one but no newborn nappies! x
Oh poor you, having flu is horrendous enough without a little person AND a bump to manage, you gave my sympathies!! We are 37 weeks now and my hips and sacrum ( learnt that word at ante natal ?) are really playing up unfortunately. Sleep at night is a pain, although have finished work now so just had a daytime nap which was rather lovely. It’s all getting VERY close now isn’t it?!
Thanks Anna ?…off to google sacrum ? X
Oh that sounds horrible Lisa. Hope you’re all on the mend. 38 weeks today and really enjoying being on leave and doing my own thing at my own pace during the day. I can’t believe I made it to 38 weeks with baby no 1 – I was so tired I fell asleep during homes under the hammer this morning!
Yey for maternity leave Alex! Get ALL the sleep you can x
