How is it May already?! It only seemed like five minutes ago that we were decorating the Christmas tree and yet here I am writing this post with the sun beaming down on my back as I research shoes for the Spring and Summer ahead for Hector. I feel as if this year has been on fast forward x 30.
I’m sure so many of you feel the same. And with balmier days approaching and Hector’s constantly growing feet, I’m already on the hunt to find some appropriate footwear that will replace his Bobux boots and see him through to Autumn at least. I’m not going to lie though…I really really struggle with finding shoes that firstly, fit properly (rather than off-the-shelf jobbies) and which secondly, I really like (read aren’t scrawled with superheroes or slogans or generally look a bit shapeless and clunky). Given previous footwear posts I’ve written here on Rock My Family I think many of you feel the same so I’m sharing my forays into the shoe shopping hunt with you on the blog today.
As I so often say…please don’t be put off by my choice of post title. Admittedly these have all been picked with Hector in mind but there’s no reason why the selection below couldn’t apply to girls too…
John Lewis
I hadn’t realised that good old John Lewis offered Clarks in their younger boy product range but lo and behold I came across these beach print canvas shoes from the brand yesterday.
We’ve tried on shoes from Clarks before but they’ve always come up a bit on the wide side despite being assured that Hector has pretty average feet (not too wide nor too narrow). Perhaps this Doodles range might fit a bit differently – can any of you share your own experiences? Regardless I like the pop of the bright blue and the velcro straps will get the nod of approval from Hector’s nursery teachers plus the seaside print is fun enough for Hector but stylish enough for me too. Win win!
Young Soles
Young Soles are one of our recommended suppliers on The Littles List (pop on over if you haven’t checked out the directory already!) and I adore their shoes particularly those aimed at little girls and wee babies. They have an old-fashioned vibe (think Victorian-esque style boots paired with pinafore frocks and tights but with a modern twist. If you want to find out more then it’s worth taking a look at their Spring/Summer Lookbook.
Hector’s first pair of shoes was a pair of navy blue suede brogues and he looked the absolute gentleman in them. There’s a part of me that can’t quite let go of that vision of him in brogues so the ‘Bobby‘ design (which incidentally is unisex) is right up my street. Ok so there’s a hefty price tag attached but the detailing, leather sole and contrast heel top piece all scream quality and would see you happily into Autumn too…providing your littles feet don’t grow too quickly.
Zara
I know! I know! Zara’s off the shelf shoes are not exactly made to measure but given that Hector’s favourite colour is currently orange slash pink I couldn’t pass over these reflective neon plimsolls without sharing them with you first. They’re neon, they’re reflective and I’m in love with their flecked soles…if only they did them in adult sizes too.
These white sandals are, yes well a nightmare waiting to happen if you’ve got littles that love jumping in muddy puddles. But imagine yourself on a beach instead and these would be just the ticket. Made from 100% cowhide leather, the sandals have an adjustable buckle detail across the top of the shoe and a strap with hook and loop ankle fastening at the back. I like the kind of 70s vibe they’ve got going on.
Start-rite
You can’t beat a bit of Start-rite; I think 90% of my childhood shoes were from the brand as were Hector’s first pair too. These sand-coloured pumps would be just the thing for summer adventures. They have velcro fastenings which Hector is learning to do up himself so I like the sense of autonomy they’ll give him.
Reassuringly the shoes have a padded ankle for comfort and support as well as a padded insole plus the shoes are machine washable at 30ยบc. Bonus!
Camper Shoes
I spotted this amazing pair of Camper shoes during a recent perusal of Cooshoo’s website at the weekend and fell in love and I’m seriously considering purchasing them for Hector’s pair of summer shoes. They look deliciously soft and I like the contrast of the blue leather to the brown soles and laces. Whilst I know that they’ll hide the dirt perfectly I can’t help thinking that every single pair of Hector’s shoes to date has been blue and I’m becoming a bit of a broken record. Plus I just know he’ll love something brighter…
Bobux
Which brings me onto this chartreuse pair of Bobux trainers…which is currently his second favourite colour. In fact he’s even mentioned ‘lellow shoes mummy’ to me on several occasions which makes me think he’s spotted some on a friend of his at nursery and wants in on the action. Knowing how wonderfully Bobux cater for growing feet and taking into account the cool contrast racing stripe and subtle perforation detail on the toe I’m thinking this design is a serious contender.
These shoes are built on a custom I-Walk last designed specifically for toddlers and preschoolers whereas the Bobux Roamer Sandal which I also love has been designed on the new Kid + sole from Bobux which is a slightly wider fit than the i-walk range. Worth bearing in mind if your child has medium to wide feet.
Converse
Staying with the yellow theme, how about these classic Converse pumps. These All Star low tops have a soft and comfortable body but with the necessary rubber sole for energetic activities. Alternatively I like this red version with matching laces. Plus there’s always the option to play twinsies between mama and baby ๐
Have any of you started the hunt for Summer shoes yet? Are you frustrated by the lack of choice for boys out there or have you just decided to go with the flow and embrace the superhero/slogan vibe? Perhaps I’m being just a wee bit picky…either way share your recommendations in the comments box below as I’m keen to hear them!
Miss width size D-E has a pair of Doodles which are standard size F. The Velcro helps. We have a Navy pair with stars on which are officially girls but could equally be boys. Clarks your website lets you down. They’re brilliant for throwing in the machine and comfortable for her.
We also have a pair of Saltwaters which are the narrowest sandals around. In Yellow.
I love the Zara ones but they look uncomfortable. Maybe as a fashion pair but I’m not about fashion shoes for kids.
We have had a pair of the doodles tbar shoes every year for the summer. They look super cute with shorts and white socks and they wash in the machine and dry in the sun super quick.
That’s good to know Rebecca…might be worth us venturing into town to try the blue doodles then. And hooray for yellow salt waters…I think Lottie would approve xx
My little boy is too young for shoes so I’m yet to venture into boy shoe shopping but I love these options! I struggle finding shoes for my little girl too that I actually like… so many are covered in tacky looking butterflies and flowers or unnecessary sequins! I love Bobux though and have bought her last 2 pairs from them! I do also rate Clarks Doodles for summer if there’s a pattern you like, we had them last year and no doubt I’ll buy another pair this year. They’re nice and light for warm weather and handy that you can machine wash them! X
SO much love for the Clarks Doodles isn’t there! I might have to take you at your word then Sarah and get Hector to try some on. The machine washable aspect is calling my name!
Yey Lolly good post as I have been struggling to find any nice shoes for my toddler. Some companies I haven’t heard of so thank you, love the yellow ones from bobux!
Does anyone have any beach shoes to recommend? Need something for holiday for my little boy is 2.5 years?
Bobux is such a great brand – both of Hector’s last sets of shoes have been from them and I would highly recommend! In terms of beach shoes do you mean jelly shoes or something else?
Nicola, we always just get the Clarks ones (https://www.clarks.co.uk/c/PiranhaBoy-Inf/p/26124503). They aren’t necessarily the most stylish but they are comfortable, don’t rub and can just go from sea to sand without bother x
Yes that’s what I mean Lolly, something they can sort of wear in the sand & then for a paddle. This is our first family holiday abroad so I wondered what others found useful as I wasn’t sure what to look for. The sort of toddler equivalent to our flip flops ๐ Lottie – thank you – they look like the sort of thing I am after!
Thank you x
Nicola as much as I loathe them, Crocs are really useful for the beach too. You can often find kids pairs in TK Maxx xxx
Our girls live in their crocs for the garden Fern. Did you know they do little Sandal versions? http://www.schuh.co.uk/kids/toddler-crocs-crocband-sandal-pale-blue-trainers/8500075360/ x
Anabelle has a couple of pairs of Clarks Doodles Lolly, she wears one pair as her Pre-School indoor shoes. I can’t sing their praises enough, the fact they come in lots of lovely designs too makes it tricky not to buy multiple pairs ๐ xxx
I’m feeling a trip to Clarks is on the cards Lorna….so encouraging to hear that everyone loves them. Recommendations totally put your mind at rest. xxx
We’ve got Zara sandals for my little boy- these ones
https://m.zara.com/uk/en/kids/baby-boy-%7C-3-months-4-years/shoes-and-bags/leather-sandals-with-hook-and-loop-straps-c903504p4357504.html
I was really dubious about “fashion” brand shoes but the sole is shaped (like Birkenstocks are) and fully adjustable with the heel strap as well so you can get a proper fit. Leather too.
I was never sure about Doodles as I think my boy would get too sweaty !
I’m in love with Bobux, little miss had her first pair from them and LOVES them. Plus they are both easy to put on and hard for her to pull off, win win ๐ Also discovered Young Soles the other day and I’m loving them. We bought some cute french little sandals for summer the other day, literally the cutest, and someone can’t put them down either. (For anyone in London, Six Pieds Trois Pouces on Bute Street. Not the cheapest but seriously lovely.) She is desperate to wear them. Now, where has the sun gone?!
Oooh and did you know you can get mini Toms and things?! Kidly (www.kidly.co.uk) has quite the selection I am tempted by.
We had some mini Toms last year but found they lost their shape and became oddly wide? They are gorgeous though and are usually reduced in Office.
Good to know, thanks Lucy!!

I bought these for my little toddler…he looks so cute in them and they are so practical too. They are perfect for narrow feet x
Silvia had a meltdown in the shoe shop today so this is timely. Her wails of a”noooo want my greeen shoes Mummy” echoed across Devon today. So I gave up and we shopped online instead- she picked out a new pair of Vans with a tropical print on a pink background. I love Vans for their very flexible yet sturdy soles and wide fit- she just doesn’t get on with Clarks.
Last summer we had a Boden pair of glads that lasted amazingly and were worn to death. This year they are back but in rose gold! For boys I fancy these high tops http://m.boden.co.uk/en-gb/boys-shoes-boots/trainers-plimsolls/52026-ind/boys-starboard-canvas-high-tops but they also have some yellow numbers… swear I don’t work for them ๐
