I was that heavily pregnant lady during possibly the hottest heatwave I have encountered in this country. Anyone fancy going through labour in 32 degree heat? Nope, I didn’t either but ho hum. Aside from the sticky hot hospital wards this obviously meant that I was feeling pretty pregnant and uncomfortable for a large portion of our summer months. More importantly what was I going to wear to keep cool and comfy?
At this point I was working almost full time in an office and also spending my time off running around after an 18 month old so my wardrobe needed to be pretty versatile. It needed to take to take me from client meetings to photoshoots to toddler groups in the village hall. Basically pretty multifunctional.
I had hardly bought any maternity clothes with Molly, and I was also pregnant over the winter with her, so I didn’t have many options when it came to Alice. I actually developed quite a capsule approach as I was loathe to spend too much money but still wanted to look nice. I therefore thought I’d share a few items that are worth buying to create your ultimate summer wardrobe that should see you through the warmer months (if they arrive) and also for those first few weeks post birth.
First up think about what you will be doing over the next few months. If you are mostly at work then choose pieces that fit with your office style. If you have a wedding then a fancy dress is probably a must and if you are jetting of on a holiday then a swimsuit is essential. Hopefully though you can find pieces that will work for all occasions without having to go overboard with the purchases and also lost you for those first few weeks post birth when, lets be honest, most of us won’t be back in our normal clothes. For me it was all about key pieces and layering. Items that could be worn together should the weather take a turn and also last you in to the Autumn months if you due date is later in the year.
I pretty much lived in dresses over the summer months. They were loose and comfortable but I could add a pair of maternity tights if it was cooler. A jersey dress is a great option for so many occasions. I went for a short sleeved wrap version similar to this black New Look one and wore it for summer trips to the park or smartened up for work with ballet flats. I even wore it with some pretty necklaces and a clutch bag for a rare night out. This floral ASOS number is also lovely. I also found myself wearing a lot more fitted dresses and tops whilst pregnant as it made be less big if that makes sense. This lovely striped dress would be great and you could add a smart jacket for work if needed but would also work over a swimsuit on holiday. It also has the benefit of being a nursing dress should you choose to breastfeed.
As the above jersey numbers I also had a couple of sundresses that were so comfy. Considering I have very almost purchased this grey knot dress from the normal Topshop range for myself I couldn’t not include it. Perfect in this country or on hols and the buttons make it great if you choose to breastfeed. I also adore this checked cold shoulder dress or New Look floral sundress for a bit of bright.
I wore my maxi dress to death. They are just so versatile and if you opt for a jersey one they are super comfy and so easy to wear. I’d say a simple black jersey dress is a must and you may find you can get away with a normal jersey maxi if it has some stretch but this maternity option is great. I also feel a spot of summery colour is required and love this blue floral dress from H&M. I also think this breton striped maxi skirt from Jo Jo Maman Bebe is a great buy as you could add a white vest and navy blazer for a smart work look or just the vest and a pretty necklace for casual.
It is definitely worth getting get a nice pair of trousers. I know this is a summer post but being England we most likely won’t be donning shorts each day. I had a pair of chino type trousers that could be dressed up with a shirt for work or worn with vest tops and flip flops for a relaxed vibe. I also rather like the pink! I also love these black Seraphine trousers which look so comfy and versatile.
I also highly recommend a pair of maternity jeans. I hadn’t bought any with Molly and was so pleased with my purchase second time round. They made me feel more me as I wasn’t really a leggings kind of person. You want lighter weight jegging types for the summer months and I bought mine from M&S, they were a really good buy.
Get yourself a good stock of vest tops in some neutral colours. I actually just bought the normal H&M longline ones to start with and added a couple of maternity ones from M&S and ASOS towards the end. A couple of T-shirts should see you through as well and this coral one from Topshop is such a gorgeous colour.
Then a nice shirt is a perfect layer for warmer days, plus perfect for post birth. If you plan of wearing it open over a vest then you could probably get away with sizing up in a normal style however I have fallen a little bit in love with this blush shirt from Topshop and also this embroidered one from New Look. They would look lovely with jeans and the blush would look fabulous worn loose, or knotted, over a black maxi dress.
I also needed a couple of smarter tops for work and this Topshop ruched blouse is lovely as well as this spot print vest top. Don’t forget, although it might be warm out you may be sat in an air conditioned office so have a cardigan to pop on if needed.
If you have some big events coming up it is worth investing in one maternity dress that makes you feel tip top. There are so many gorgeous options out there are the moment. Personally I would probably go for more of a tea dress style that you can then wear afterwards either smarter to work or with your flip flops. This Topshop Ditsy Dress is super pretty. However if you do have to go all out then how about this beautiful Mamalicious blush number or this Topshop ruffle dress. Apologies, I have a thing for blush at the moment. If you are currently breastfeeding then I adore this floral number from H&M for it’s beautiful summery design. It’s sadly out of stock in a couple of sizes but worth checking in store.
Swimsuit wise I actually went for a tankini option and I’m loving the aztec print on this Topshop one. If you were going for a swimsuit then this H&M tropical print is ideal for beachy holidays or if bright isn’t your thing then this navy spot one is a classic.
If you are heading abroad I would definitely recommend a kimono. They are perfect for slipping on over swimwear but can be worn back in this country with jeans and a vest to dress them up. New Look has this great long line one and how cute is this ASOS pom pom dress for slipping on to the beach?
Finally a nice lightweight jacket or blazer is an excellent option for throwing on with jeans or over a dress for work to smarten up an outfit. I got away with wearing one of my existing jackets as I didn’t do it up but I reckon you probably all need to check out Charlotte’s jersey jacket if you haven’t already. Topshop also do a maternity version don’t you know.
I hope that has given you a bit of inspiration for how to dress for summer without breaking the bank buying lots of new clothes. A couple of key purchases, a bit of mixing and matching and you should be able to hop from office to beach. Almost!

We are always looking to understand a little bit more about our readers and would love it if you could take thirty seconds to answer four very quick questions about yourself. Super quick and super easy. Thank you in advance.
Good selection Lottie! I’m not pregnant now but I was last summer and I lived in those loose patterned trousers from H&M (not sure what they’re called, harem??) – not specifically maternity but it didn’t matter as they have an elasticated waist which I just put under the bump and wore with a plain maternity vest top! Like these…. http://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0489838002.html#Black/Patterned
I loved my maternity jeans too but these were a life saver when it was too warm for jeans but I didn’t want to wear a dress! I found nice ribbed maternity vest tops from Next in a range of colours. On the maxi dress front, boohoo is great for cheap ones! X
Excellent tip on the loose trousers. I never bought any and probably should have. Next also have a great selection of the non maternity ones so that might be worth a peek. I always forget about Boohoo for Maxi dresses! x
Hi Lottie great post! I’m currently breast feeding, do you know if the blue H&M maxi dress would work for that or is it just maternity?
Morning Nastasia. I’m afraid I don’t think it is a nursing one. You could probably easily pull it down if you had a shawl but that’s not quite so discreet. The ASOS floral one mentioned above is but is shorter. If you want a nursing maxi dress how about this one http://www.mothercare.com/nursing-tops-and-dresses/orange-cold-shoulder-nursing-maxi-dress/LLC160.html?dwvar_LLC160_color=Black&dwvar_LLC160_maternityClothingSize=8&dwvar_LLC160_clothingLength=Leg%2031&cgid=#q=nursing+dress&sz=12&start=1 or the cross over front on this one would make it easy for breastfeeding http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_103030890460_-1xx
Good picks Lottie! I’m seriously tempted by the little floral dress from asos. I’m due this week so mainly for its nursing properties and cute print. I never got on with maternity trousers of any kind and even finding tights a struggle at the moment as none of them tend to stay over the bump. Dresses are definitely the most comfortable option for me now – mainly of the midi and maxi variety as my legs are not for showing at the moment (thread veins and tree trunks anyone?). I had found Jojo maternity dungarees really good http://www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/black-maternity-dungarees-d5441.html but for summer I’d be tempted with these http://www.asos.com/asos-maternity/asos-maternity-dungaree-jumpsuit-in-jersey/prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=5232565&clr=Black&SearchQuery=maternity+dungarees&pgesize=7&pge=0&totalstyles=7&gridsize=3&gridrow=2&gridcolumn=2 .
I am also due this week Kat and considering the Asos dress too! Would be lovely with sandals or converse over the summer! All the best with baby’s arrival!
How are you due this week, that’s gone super fast. Loving the dungarees. I was concerned about the trips to the toilet but I probably should have got over my fear!! Make sure you sit and put your feet up to rest at night if you can xx
This is such a well timed post for me! I am currently pregnant with our first baby – due in November so I will be pregnant alllll summer which includes a trip abroad, hen party and being a bridesmaid. Hard enought to shop for when your not pregnant! I went shopping on Saturday to do a wardrobe update as my bump is now starting to show. I was so disappointed with the maternity ranges in places like Topshop – I know they have more online but the selection in store is teeny and you really want to be able to try these things on. I seem to spend half my life sending parcels back as it is. I found some great items in Cos and &other stories. The style of a lot of their clothes are oversized anyway which means plenty of room for bump to grow into. I still want to look like me whilst pregnant and these completely suit my style. I now just need to get some new swimwear and love the Topshop tankini! Also have bought some great Zara culottes with an elasticated tie waist which are comfiest thing ever!
I too find maternity ranges a bit limiting and as you say you definitely need to try them on. With my first pregnancy I ended up in lots of leggings and long tops which just wasn’t me so I was pleased that I managed to find more ‘me’ clothes when I was pregnant with Alice. I think loose waists and fits are the way forward. Also, always love a pair of culottes xx
Hey Lottie this is great thanks, super good picks, loving the dress. I was wondering if anyone has any mat swimwear form topshop of h&m that is more than a size 10? had a look at the swimsuit in the pics above the other day and whislt very pretty, is very thin and doesn’t even have any bra cups, would look lovely on a maternity model maybe or if you’re in your early twenties but not anyone with some curves! any tips much appreciated on decent swimwear!thanks x
Hmmm, yes you are probably right. Personally I would opt for M&S or John Lewis if you want more structure although their designs are much plainer. Jo Jo has some nice striped ones. Let’s hope someone else has some good recommendations xx
I bought a size 12 from top shop swim costume although I’m a size 10 (I find they come up small!) and quite ‘busty’. It was fine for gentle laps round the pool but for anything more strenuous there’s no way it would have held me in! So I’d look elsewhere probs. Maybe m&s? To be honest, second time around I wore a normal non mat costume in a size up and it was fine – they’re pretty stretchy!!
I bought a maternity swimming costume from Next in a size 12 (my usual size) and it was fine! Quite roomy and flattering! I had previously bought a maternity tankini top from Topshop and it was sooo tight and not wearable at all!
I got a lovely tankini from mothercate in the sale last year and would definitely recommend it. Really nice fit, good support and it’s stretchy enough that I wore quite a while post partum without looking huge.
Thanks Sarah, Victoria, Maike and Lottie, really appreciate your suggestions xx
Good post! Just found out I am expecting no.2 so starting to go through my old maternity clothes (although I only had a very small number of things). I had an excellent selection of dresses from Isabella Oliver for work, literally the same style in different colours to team with cardigans and flats. And I totally agree – I also wore tight-fitting things as it made me feel smaller! Jeans-wise I had some from TopShop I bought post-baby that were brilliant, having survived on one pair (Gap) during pregnancy. And a few Gap maternity t-shirts. Ditto on the long H&M normal vests, they were great for breastfeeding too to layer under jumpers to avoid excess flashing or getting cold (and holding my tummy in!). For anyone expecting in winter I whole-heartedly recommend strappy tops under jumpers, no need for fancy breastfeeding tops if you don’t want them! I bought normal stretchy waisted shorts and linen trousers for summer though, Gap and M&S were my go-to so if you don’t need/want over the bump things these were really useful (and can obviously be used post-baby too).
eBay for isabella oliver and seraphiine is now my go to! Some super great bargains, just picked up a brely worn £90 dress for £8. Arrived today and is perfect. And defo second the fitted clothes thing- tried to upsize in zara tope etc last time and I thought Ilooked ok but looking back was like a baby hippo. Defo only works if you are pretty small to start with, otherwise I would definitely embrace the bump x
I never got lucky on eBay but can totally recommend Isabella Oliver dresses – I only bought one (second was a free gift with my order) and I’ve pretty much lived in them. They’ve seen me through from three months to full term (all that ruching is magic) and washed pretty well too so even though I paid around £70 it was worth it. Well done on that £8 bargain.
I got that floral nursing H&M dress for a summer wedding and can definitely confirm it’s lovely! Really nice fit, comfortable and actually doesn’t look frumpy! I found maternity wear last summer actually quite easy (in spite of the heat) but I’m really struggling with nice nursing wear. Whilst I love wrap dresses, they’re not very subtle to feed in when you don’t use a shawl/cover!
And I second the light harem-style trousers, loved them!
So pleased to hear a thumbs up for the floral dress. It really does look lovely. I feel perhaps I should have got in with the harem trousers! xxx
