Autumn is hands down my most favourite season of the year. Regardless of the fact that it marks my wedding anniversary and Hector’s birthday month, I absolutely adore that back to school feeling that makes itself known as soon as we reach September 1st in the calendar.

There are conkers and falling leaves and toffee apples and fireworks and hot chocolates and toasty cuddles next to the bonfire. AND there are all the new clothes in the shops, layer upon layer of delicious knits and scarves and boots and hats, oh I could go on. What’s even better is that this year I have a little man to dress up in aforementioned layers since last year was all about the baby grow.

It seemed right then to share my Autumn fashion finds for little boys with you, some of which have accidentally made their way into Hector’s wardrobe as a result of researching this post. Oooops.

I should probably note that the majority of the fashion in this post covers from about 1-5 year olds although some items are available in larger sizes plus I personally think there’s a whole heap of clothing that would be easily transferable to a little girl’s wardrobe too so don’t be put off by the title of this post.

Tops

Quite a few of the tops I’ve included in the slider above pretty much follow the same design; long sleeved t-shirts with two buttons on the shoulder with some kind of print on the front. Like this sweet apple top from John Lewis or this stripy number with house print on the front or this bright orange ‘Winter is Here‘ version. Simple, plain but gets the job done and super easy to layer over without worrying if they’re going to overheat when transitioning from outside to indoors.

Hector actually owns both the glow in the dark top which he’ll be sporting at a silent fireworks event tomorrow (let’s see if it actually glows!), and this navy polo which has been a wardrobe staple and which comes in four colours. It’s actually so good (washes well, fits like a dream) that I’m tempted to get the next size up too.

Shirts are also great layering tools – this foxy number was bought for Hector by his aunt and looks particularly sweet with a homemade cream cable knitted jumper that he owns. Equally this mao collared soft grey print by Zara is great for those boys that are easily irritated by collars.

For the treasure-hunting, dinosaur seeking boys out there, I present this woodland adventure map top from M&S which continues the print from the front over onto the back which I actually really adore; the moose is probably my favourite from the illustration. Alternatively I’m really really tempted by this baby dinosaur print top (I think it’s the happy t-rexes!) from John Lewis and at £11.00 I probably should just bite the bullet and get it for him. It’s also a top that I think Becky’s little boy would go mad for too considering his current obsession with the creatures.

Jumpers & Cardigans

It’s nearly Christmas so it goes without saying that you need some kind of nordic inspired, festive jumper in your life, Sarah Lund style. Oh and your littles do too. Good job I’ve been on the hunt to find the best of the best for you then.

Without a doubt when it comes to jumpers my first stop is always Boden. The quality of their knits is second to none and their pricing is definitely on point. Plus there’s always some kind of promotion running with the brand so I pretty much always come away feeling like I’ve had a bargain.

Unfortunately some of the best jumpers have sold out by the time I came to write this post but there’s still stock of this miniature deer pattern in his own Christmas jumper. I love the thought that has gone into positioning the two buttons either side of the neck to make the whole dressing experience that bit easier for babes that would prefer to spend much of their daily activities half-naked.

Alternatively and staying on the animal theme, this foxy hoody cardigan is the perfect half way house for those days when it’s too warm for a coat but too cold for simply a sweatshirt. Plus it has ears; how can anyone resist ears?

If you’re not keen on orange but want something similar to the Boden knitted jacket then how about this teal green, foxy fleece lined hoody from John Lewis. Available in sizes from 0-3 years, the piece comes with a lined hood to keep tiny ears warm and a furry friend emblazoned across their front to keep them company.

Zara have pulled out all the stops this season with some pieces that frankly I wouldn’t mind wearing myself. Unisex in style so perfect for the mini girls in your life too I actually found it really hard to narrow down a selection to appear in this post from their current jumper collection. In the end I’ve settled on this knitted off-white polar bear snuggly and this jacquard cardigan with a fleecy lining. I also want this and this too.

Trousers & Leggings

I have to say that I’m impressed with the High Street’s offerings for boys at the moment. Not so long back, pretty much all we had to choose from was a limited offer of basic apparel in varying shades of blue. Thankfully times have changed and now our boys can scamper about in all colours of the rainbow.

Now that Hector is crawling and cruising and squatting and climbing but not yet walking we’ve found that leggings really are the best solution for maximum mobility. I’ve yet to find anywhere that can beat the price point and range offered by Zara and we’ve invested in multiple pairs that hopefully should see us through to the other side of Christmas. Whilst these ghost and monster themed leggings are clearly inspired by Halloween there’s no reason why your littles can’t wear them all year round.

For the colder days where leggings aren’t going to cut it, I’ve been looking elsewhere for stretchy bottoms that will withstand the daily rough and tumbles of small boys. I’m liking these utility trousers from M&S that come with an adjustable waist for extra comfort (or pot bellies). Alternatively these emerald green cords can be pulled on and off saving the need for fiddly zips and buttons particularly when potty training. Both are available in sizes 1-7 years.

Charlotte recently treated Hector to these burgundy jeans from Gap for his birthday and they’re a sure fire hit. Despite being jeans, they’ve been made with elastane providing that all important stretch for maximum movement. Available in sizes up to five years. Lastly every kid needs a pair of dungarees in their wardrobe – I like this set from Zara.

Playsuits & Play Sets

When Hector was smaller he pretty much lived in playsuits or matching top and trouser combos. We haven’t invested in as many for this season but I have my eye on this Christmas themed ‘Snow Cool‘ set from Joules – hello can this come in adult sizes too please! And when I found out the name of this fox and tractor printed set I developed a little crush on it plus I can’t say no to an elbow patch either; I am such an easy sell.

Hector is currently obsessed with dogs (actually what kid isn’t?!) so this knitted stripy all in one from John Lewis suits us both down to the ground. It looks like a knitted wool but is actually 100% cotton thus negating the hassle of hand washing and special wool washes in the washing machine. Plus it’s footless so suits those not quite walking yet too.

Continuing the animal theme, the teal Monkey romper from Polarn O. Pyret is super cute as well. It does only go up to six months and is placed at the higher end of the spend spectrum but I can say from experience that they’re worth every penny. The quality is fantastic and they wash so incredibly well. And whilst it’s labelled to fit up to six months they are cut rather generously on the length side of things particularly when you consider the foldable leg cuffs for growing room. I had Hector in Polarn O. Pyret bodysuits two months past the labelled size and they fitted comfortably and he’s tall for his age.

Accessories

I actually wasn’t intending to include any accessories in this post as actually I think belts and braces, scarves, hats, socks, gloves, capes and crowns and wands and all the other bits of kids paraphernalia that they seem to amass on a crazy scale warrants a post in itself. But these cutesy animal socks from Joules and these Christmas themed socks from John Lewis mysteriously found their way in and I didn’t have the heart to remove them. Frankly it’s a rite of passage to wear some kind of Christmas sock whatever your age and if you can’t have a foxy sock when you’re a kid then frankly when can you?

On a serious note though I’ve found the John Lewis socks with the rubber dots on the underside to be an absolute godsend – Hector is on the verge of walking but isn’t there yet and these socks help to stabilise him on our slippy floors whilst he cruises.

Following my previous post on kids coats I seem to have found a very cute pair of mittens from H&M at the bargainous price of £2.99. They’re a lovely cable knit with cuffs and a fleece lining and at that price you can’t complain if one decides to go walkabout which it inevitably will. Be quick though as when I last checked some sizes were close to selling out. Pair it up with this ‘robber’ beanie for the little thief of your heart. (How cheesy was that!)

So there we have it – a small round-up of some of the best Autumn fashion for little boys. Are you on the hunt for anything in particular? What’s been your best buy of the season so far? And why do clothes always look so much cooler in smaller sizes?
