Yes, I am very aware that some days there is still frost in the morning and it isn’t exactly toasty warm but I am ever hopeful that Spring is on the way. Heck, there has been blossom on the the trees for some time now so surely that is a sign that it’s time to pack away the winter coats and woolys.
This winter the girls have been sporting toasty warm anoraks with fleece linings and big cosy hoods. Another month and these will probably be too warm for running around the park so I have been on the hunt for new spring coats to see them through the spring and early summer. Who, am I kidding, probably most of the summer in this country.
There is an adorable range of coats out there at the moment and so I decided to snap up the one’s I love before they sell out. I have been known to dither before and miss out on a specific colour or print so I’m bringing you my favourite children’s spring coats for boys and girls.
Boden
I am starting with Boden purely because this is the coat I have purchased for Molly. I also managed to grab it when there was a 20% off and used a voucher they had sent so it was an extra bargain. This purple stripes number has a touch of a retro feel but the colours are uber pretty. Molly had a Boden coat this winter and it has washed unbelievably well. Pretty much in the washing machine most weeks due to Forest school and it still looks as good as new. This is a lightweight version with a soft jersey lining and comes in an array of designs. This bird print was a close second and the pack away mac looks like a great idea.
For the mini’s this soft quilted jacket has always been a favourite. The girl’s had them when they were little and now that Mini Boden comes in age 3-4 I am very much tempted to purchase for Alice this spring. They also have the mini version of Molly’s anorak in a lovely bird or dinosaur design. Both equally cute.
M&S
Alice was the lucky recipient of this Fisherman’s Mac for a Christmas present from her Godparents. The colour is brilliant and it is also showerproof which is ideal.
This Ditsy print mac looks super lightweight or the car print version is lots of fun.
I am also loving this rather dapper Autograph Harrington jacket. Just adorable.
For the littlest ones M&S have got serious style stakes this season. This Chambray hooded jacket is just the best.
John Lewis
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how amazing this 3D character coat is? Available up to 2 years it has a grey graphic print with the sweetest little cat motif you ever did see. And it has ears on the hood. Pretty much perfect in my eyes.
Navy jersey with a breton stripe lining make this a classic style that will match in any wardrobe.
Zara
I really like the bold pink stripes on this waterproof raincoat. It’s got a soft jersey lining to make it nice and cosy for the kids.
Zara have also got a great range of sweatshirt jackets for the warmer days. This bottle print design is lots of fun.
I would also rather like this Denim parka in my size please.
H&M
H&M have a good selection of well priced spring jackets at the moment. This navy and white striped shell jacket is just right for popping out and about. It also comes in a cute ditsy floral print.
This adorable bird print jacket has the sweetest illustrative design and is available up to 2 years.
For bigger kids this Nylon jacket is rather trendy and comes in a few different colour ways.
Joules
Although not technically a ‘coat’ I have always purchased a gilet for the girls. They are ideal for slipping on over a jumper as an extra layer of warmth. Our neighbour told Molly he liked her body warmer and I couldn’t stop laughing when she told him ‘It’s not a body warmer. It’s a gilet!’.
Anyway, I always purchase one from Joules and this season they have their classic plain coloured versions or this rather fetching horse design which I’m guessing Molly would love.
Tesco
Tesco have a great range of fun macs from this lovely green to a bright blue. I am a big fan of this design and it’s only £12 to boot.
If you read our newborn essentials post you’ll know that they need a little coat and this soft jersey number in mint green would be perfect for warmer days.
That’s my top picks for Children’s spring coats and I must admit I am now rather tempted to purchase a couple more for Molly and Alice. Pretty sure they need more than one don’t they?
Some lovely picks here. I’m not generally a Next fan for Girlswear but this is my choice for Fern…

Loving the ochre Philippa. I’m the same with Next but you do sometimes find a beauty! x
Oh Bugger OFF **exasperated too ENABLED face**
I’ve been looking for a Spring jacket for ages but I want something relatively gender neutral and have been struggling. Her coat last year was a navy padded jacket with red inner stripe from Petit Bateau (hand me down obviously – am not MADE of money) but she got mistaken for a boy so many times. I do love the Navy padded jacket from John Lewis but she’s too BIG now. Lets not wail about where our babies have gone yeah?
Almost bought the red M & S one yesterday with 20% off everything but I’m not LOVING the red on my blonde daughter. Our capsule wardrobe colours (yeah she’s one…what of it?) for spring summer are nautical inspired navy, whites and blues. So am quite tempted by the plain mac from Tesco. Or maybe the birds from Boden.
DOES ANYONE HAVE A CODE?
Am actually LOVING the work of Next this season on the old nautical inspired classics. And I almost bought that MAC Phillipa bought for Fern but we did mustard for Autumn Winter so…
Rebecca this one from Sainsburys might work for you – https://tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/p/Girls-Blue-Spot-Jacket-%289-months–5-years%29/129044590-Blue?searchTerm=:relevance&searchProduct=
The photo doesn’t really do it justice, it’s almost like a chambray colour and feel, although it does have bows and a pink lining so might be too girly for what you’re after?
I always love Next for Elle – but I’m a pink, floral print loving Mummy – shhhh don’t tell anyone…x
Your secret is safe with me Fern! x
Ha ha! I hate that Alice can’t fit in the John Lewis baby stuff now. Such a shame. Alice is really blonde and the red mac seems to be ok on her. It’s quite a soft red rather than harsh if that makes sense? So would probably go well with the nautical. It has a nice blue spotty lining too. Molly’s wardrobe is currently colour co-ordinated. But only with PINK! She refuses to wear any other colour! G7B5 seems to be working for 20% off Boden plus free delivery. xxx
Hmmm…..its got BOWS on it. I prefer clean lines (honestly, who AM I…its a bloody coat for a ONE YEAR OLD?)
I’m just going to have to order the Boden one aren’t I? Oh GOD. Which means I need to order all the other stuff in my basket **sighs**
I did a mad Gap binge in their recent 35% code day but the quality was pretty naff so I returned MOST of it (although I’d really recommend these
http://www.gap.co.uk/browse/product.do?cid=87878&vid=1&pid=000167218001 which are fabulous).
Don’t worry, I veto a lot of clothes for the girls! Yep, afraid it might be Boden. The quality is so good and love the prints. You basket may also increase when you see all the new summer clothes that dropped yesterday. Too much cuteness. xx
Also, I have been checking out those T’s so thanks for the recommendation x
Hilarious. I also strive for a capsule wardrobe for Fern (SO?) and have hesitated over the Next Mac purchase for the exact same reason you state ?
I love the Tesco macs and the red M&S coat. I’ve just bought a spring coat for my little, we went for this one https://tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/p/Boys-Yellow-Fishermans-Jacket-%289-months-5-years%29/129004328-Yellow?searchTerm=:relevance&searchProduct= which Sainsburys says is for boys, but I think will suit my little girl perfectly!
Love the yellow. Fishermans macs are the best and so many good ones around this season x
