Can I just start this by saying what on earth is going on with the weather?! Last week I was sat in sunnier climes and I’ve come home to rain, snow, hail and sun. And that’s all just in one day!
Anyway, if you have read my previous posts on choosing a family holiday and my concerns over boarding an aeroplane with small children then you will know that I had been planning our first family holiday abroad. I’m sad to say the holiday has now been and gone but my gosh it was good! So much fun and so many memories. Shame the healthy glow is staying hidden under warm jumpers for now!
For various reasons, namely being pregnant or having a tearaway toddler, we have never made it abroad with the girls but decided with Molly starting school in September we really should. I’m not sure why we waited quite so long.
When it came to choosing where to go I think I spent an inordinate amount of time online browsing every possible website. Last minute.com and Teletext became my new friends. Luckily Teletext is a tad easier to use now and there is non of that sitting in front of the TV frantically trying to get it to pause on the screen you wanted before having to sit for another 10 minutes whilst it went back through it all. Or am I just showing my age?!
We started off thinking about the Canaries but I wasn’t sure if the flight would be a bit far so instead opted for Portugal. I spent ages trying to find somewhere good to stay (luckily the O’Sheas had more luck that me as they are jetting off soon) and finally settled on a hotel. Then I had a mild panic that it might not be that warm and the pools weren’t heated so was it the right place to go? I will point out here that I am one of the worlds most indecisive people. A constant frustration to my long suffering husband. Anyway, fast forward a few hours and I had found a god deal on Thomsons at a hotel I had been recommended in Gran Canaria. Suddenly, after months of looking we were booked.
We ended up going a few week’s earlier than we had planned simply because the flight times were so much better. No one wants to be arriving at 2am with two small children. And the flights were absolutely fine. I don’t know what I worried about (as you all told me!). As long as they had the iPad and a constant supply of biscuits they were good.
I honestly can’t gush enough about our hotel. We stayed at the Lopesan Baobab in Meloneras which slightly randomly is a sprawling African themed hotel which I was unsure of to start with but I shouldn’t have been. I’ll put my hands up and say I am a hotel snob. I love staying in gorgeous places which, to be honest, is probably because we very rarely get to stay anywhere anymore (sob!). This hotel did not disappoint. I have to say it was probably the nicest foreign hotel I have ever stayed in. I’m hoping I am not alone when I say this but I always judge a place on the toilets (sad I know) and the Baobab definitely passed the test. Boutique styling, big granite sinks and immaculately clean – even by the pools with all the wet children running in and out. The rest of the hotel was fantastic and there were nine different pools for the girls to choose from which kept us busy.
To be honest we didn’t do a lot for the whole week and that was just what we needed as a family. No dashing off here and there on sightseeing tours. Just leisurely days spent lounging by the pool and eating – far too much judging by the fit of my jeans!! Every day kind of floated by and the best thing was having Edd there the whole time. He’s away so much in the week that it was lovely to spend time together and the girls adored having Daddy around to splash and dunk in the pool with. Plus it meant I got much needed sun lounger time. I managed to read three books in peace. AMAZING. Edd is fantastic at being the fun playful dad and luckily loves being in the water as much as the girls did.
Molly became a complete mermaid and went from not liking her face being splashed to full on dunks and swimming in the water. I kid you not, Edd would literally throw her across the pool like a rugby ball where she would plunge under until her armbands floated her back up. She LOVED it. Luckily I am used to Edd’s sometimes rather heart stopping playfulness. From a very young age they have been swung exceptionally high on swings and spun round so fast on roundabouts that I’m not sure how they can even stand afterwards. I just have to look away!
I’m ashamed to admit we only made it to the beach twice. It was a short stroll away but for some reason the girls just preferred the pools. The beach was fantastic though with some of the most epic sand dunes I have seen. They were vast.
We didn’t really venture out many places as we had booked full board so all our meals were included. In retrospect we could have done half board quite easily and I think my poor stomach may have thanked me for it. That said, the food was really good. All manner of sea food and dishes cooked fresh for you each meal time with a plethora of salads and accompaniments. Breakfast was my favourite with tables of cereals, seeds, nuts, fruits and yoghurts along with freshly cooked omelettes and of course the obligatory pastries. I tried to stay as healthy as I could at most meals but the puddings definitely snuck in. But then if you can’t treat yourself when on holiday when can you? I actually managed to go for a run each day which believe me is very unusual. I think I felt I needed to in order to compensate. Whilst Edd and I tucked in we really struggled with the girls which is no surprise given their fussy tendencies. It wasn’t that there was a lack of choice for them, the complete opposite, but they survived on pasta, chips and biscuits. They wouldn’t even eat the usual things they love like bananas and strawberries. No chance of anything remotely healthy passing their lips. Unless strawberry ice cream counts?!
The hotel did offer a babysitting service but we preferred to spend time together. Plus, who would want to miss the nightly mini disco?! It was the highlight of the girl’s day and they loved getting dressed up ready for dinner and the disco and having a little boogie.
Oh, and I must say a huge hello to the lovely Rock My Family reader and her gorgeous little boy who we met during a rendition of ‘The Music Man’! Love that I can go away and still chat to you lovely lot. Quite hilarious being ‘recognised’ though!
I know everyone says it but I can’t believe it is over. It was back to reality with a bang though as we landed Monday night and Edd was off down to London early the next morning and I headed straight off the next day to a Rock My Wedding shoot. It’s all go!
Roll on our next family break in Devon. I’m just hoping the sunshine makes an appearance or the girls may get a shock at the sea temperature!
Are any of you jetting of on your travels any time soon?
Yay! I’m so pleased you enjoyed it as a family, how wonderful to spend quality time together somewhere warm after what seems like the longest coldest winter, even here in Devon!
Next stop long haul travel adventures for you all… Disney/NYC combo? ?? xx
Already booked!! he he! Please can you request some sunshine for Devon ready for June when we visit please? xxx
This sounds perfect, I’m not at all jealous of the sunshine and relaxation!!!
We are spending 3 weeks in the south of France in July to stay with my mum and step dad (they live there most of the year).
Baby number 3 is due 18th June…we fly 6 weeks later. I’m hoping that our two boys will be as well behaved as your girls were on the flight!
My husband is joining us for the first week but has to go back to work so we are staying out there with nanny and granddad for another two weeks and making the most of the summer hols! slightly terrified about the return leg of the journey…just me and 3 children should be fun/hideous! I’m not so concerned about the flight but the logistics of herding them through the airport with all the luggage, at least on the plane, even if they play up, they are contained!
All that aside, I can’t wait for some family time in the sun around the pool…and the wine…the wine will help!
Three weeks in the south of France sounds blissful and grandparents on hand mean much more time for feet up (and wine drinking!!) hopefully. I’m sure you will be fine in the airport. I felt like I was constantly shouting for them to keep up to no avail. You will have an amazing time and the kids will adore it so hopefully will behave for mummy on the trip home xxxx
Sounds like a lovely break! I also rate places based on the bathrooms! We are heading off to Cornwall in 2 weeks for our first holiday as a family of 3! Can’t wait! We are also very lucky to be joining my family for a cruise round the Greek islands in July! Our 4 month old loves swimming so plan to spend most of the week in the pool! I’m a bit apprehensive about the travelling and everything we will need to take, especially as she will have been weaning for 6 weeks then!
It sounds like you had a wonderful time. Does anybody have any advice about taking a 5 month baby on holiday? This is our 1st baby and I don’t know the rules/etiquette around travelling/dining with a baby abroad. I will be breastfeeding and we are staying in a 5*Spa Resort in Madeira. I’m a bit nervous about taking a small baby to such a fancy place. We looked at the usual holidays but decided on a more expensive place as we wouldn’t be traveling very far each day and needed to feel relaxed and enjoy our room for the whole 2 weeks. Gem x. P.S, I also judge places by their toilets
Hi Gem,
We took Silvia to Italy at 4.5 months and had the best time. We found that people were far more relaxed about breastfeeding there than here, anywhere and everywhere, we never had any trouble. Italian ladies would come up and say “oh, latte di Mamma!” and fuss over the baby, waiters would blow kisses and make faces, everyone loved to talk to and about her- we had a ball! Certainly no grumpy faces and *those* looks if she cried in a restaurant. I think maybe in parts of southern Europe like Spain and Portugal it goes along with topless sunbathing that boobs are less of a big deal… The flight was easy too, fed on take off and landing and she was fascinated by all the bright colours. Relax and enjoy, we are so glad we did it! Xx
Hi Gemma, we took our little boy to Spain when he was 11 weeks old. I agree with Lucy, that people seemed much more relaxed and easy going with babies and feeding than in the UK! We weren’t expecting to be able to go out much, but we went out to restaurants every night! He is a good sleeper (at night anyway – naps in the day are another story), and he just slept in his pram and every restaurant was happy for us to have the pram by the table. I think Europe is more family orientated, so every restaurant we went to had lots of families there.
The only time we had an issue it was an English couple that made comments! We took him again at 8 months and the only thing we did different was go out earlier at night because he was in more of a bedtime routine, in some ways this was easier because most of the other people out at that time were also families.
If you are bothered about feeding, invest in some sarongs/large muslins that you can use to protect your modesty a little.
We are going abroad again in 6 weeks and he will be 18 months – I think this will be much more difficult than when he was younger!
This all sounds wonderful! Can I just ask; were you all in one big room/ suite? This always puts me off, what do you do when the kids are asleep and you don’t want to go to bed?! 🙂
Hi Amy, We were actually and I probably should have said that. One thing we wanted was separate rooms but after my indecisiveness we ended up here with one big family room. It was really good as was huge with two double beds and a sofa bed too. When we put the girls to bed we sat out on the terrace with a book (and a drink!!) which was actually really nice. Luckily our girls are quite deep sleepers so didn’t matter once they were asleep if we went back in. We also put them to bed later than normal due to dinner and disco so they were quite tired. Edd did have to wear ear plugs to cut out the girls snores, ha ha, which also meant he slept thorough any middle of the night wake ups. Typical! xx
Ahh! I’m reading this from my sun lounger…. In Gran Canaria!! We adore it here, 2nd year we’ve visited with friends, 5 kids in total ranging from 2 to 9 years old. We stay at the Dunas Suites and Villas in nearby Maspalomas, as they can provide 2 bedroom suites with space for our 3rd to sleep on sofa bed in lounge. All inclusive with plenty of choice at all meal times. The weather is gorgeous, very family friendly resort and the 3hr40 flight from Bournemouth is just about do-able (we ashamedly throw every single electronic device at the kids to keep them quiet in the air). School fines are (cheekily) avoided too as we make the most of the bank holiday Monday this week – our LEA only charges if you take the kids out for 5 or more school days. It’s so lovely to warm our chilly English bones in the sunshine ?
Not jealous at all Nicola! We looked at Dunas and was one of our choices. May have to check it out next year. Oh, you are lucky on the school fines. I’m hoping the same applies. Enjoy the rest of the hols and pretty please bring some sunshine back for us xxx
Lottie this sounds blissful!! What a wonderful holiday! I’m very much looking forward to my trip away with the family in September now!
It was Lolly! Roll on September for your holibobs xxx
It sounds like you had a lovely time! We’re also off to Devon in June (doing the daily sun dance) and then Rhodes in July with our then 5 month old. On both holidays we’re off with the grandparents so hoping that we will get a bit of R&R! My only concern is about airport transfers and baby car seats. I’ve requested these when booking but am worried about the quality. Hopefully it will be ok! Xx
