October is a good month. No, I don’t like the nights drawing in and I’m not a fan of the cold but there is something about those last sunny days of the year where I’ll be soaking up as much Vitamin D as possible. It’s also my birthday month so if that isn’t a reason to love a month I don’t know what is. I’m hoping it’s going to be a good month full of fun and laughter with the littles. Here’s some of the things I’m looking forward to in October.
Somehow Molly has got through her first few weeks at school and half term is creeping up on us. I’m so looking forward to having her at home for a whole week and most importantly not having to rush out the door each morning amidst shouts of ‘have you cleaned your teeth’ and ‘hurry up and put your shoes on’. We don’t have any major plans but Edd is hopefully going to take a few days off work so a few day trips may be in order.
October means I can justifiably put the wood burner on and there is nothing I love more than cosying down in the snug with the fire on and a good bit of trash telly. The chimney sweep is coming next week and the wood is being delivered today so we will be good to go. After reading Lauren’s post on Hygge I am also planning on embracing this way of life. Who wouldn’t want a day full of candles and hot chocolate?
Also porridge. October means that I switch to my winter breakfast of choice. There is nothing better or more filling than a nice creamy bowl of porridge. I try to soak my oats overnight (but always forget) and serve it with grated apple and cinnamon stirred through. I feel I need to get a bit of variation going so all suggestions for porridge toppings welcome.
The end of the month sees me get another year older. How on earth did I suddenly get to 35? I’m pretty sure I’m not and quite frequently (on purpose) forget my age. I’m not one for big birthday celebrations but I am looking forward to making a nice cake, yes I make my own, and hopefully being a bit spoilt. I’ve got a dinner planned with my best baby club girls, minus the baby’s, and Edd and I will no doubt sneak off for a nice lunch.
Now the girls are a bit older they adore Halloween. It’s become one of Molly’s milestone year markers constantly asking when Halloween is and what costume they will wear. This year we are going to a Halloween party at the local village hall followed by a spot of trick or treating around the village. It’s so cute as all the little one’s go out early and call on all the houses that are proudly displaying their pumpkins. I’ll also be getting creative with the pumpkins again this year and perhaps baking up some pumpkin inspired baking too.
What have you got planned over the next month? Anything exciting or just some simple little things that you are looking forward to?
Sounds like a lovely October. I really enjoy this morning though too, until the clocks go back! I like hearty stews and love porridge! I sometimes make a spicy fruit topping for porridge with dried fruit, cinnamon or mixed spice, sometimes some citrus peel and just heat it up with a bit if water. Or make a quick compote with frozen berries and honey. Yum!
Citrus peel sounds amazing. Definitely giving that a go. xx
I love the coloured leaves, but the cold and the darkness not so much. I like berries in my porridge, even if they are straight from the freezer. They bring back a little of the summer.
Totally with you on the berries reminding me of summer. Can’t believe it is over.x
I love the Autumn feel of October, not so cold you don’t want to leave the house but porridge, roast dinners & crumbles are perfectly acceptable! The sound of crunching leaves & sunny days make October a perfect month. We’ve switched to porridge here too & we add frozen blueberries for the last two minutes of cooking & then drizzle with maple syrup or cashew butter. (And I always realise once I’m in bed that I haven’t soaked my oats ?) x
We had roast and crumble yesterday. Seriously yum. I do love blueberries and cashew butter sounds great. Adding those to my list thank you x
