I’m not quite sure how it has come round so quickly but very soon we will be jetting off on our first foreign family holiday. Yippee!
After debating where to go we finally settled on The Canaries mainly as it will be warm at this time of year and isn’t a ridiculous plane journey. One thing I hadn’t factored in was quite how much stuff (of the clothing variety!) that I would need to purchase. And not just for the girls! Considering our last five plus years of holidays have been sat on the normally rather cold beach in Devon we have a serious lack of clothing suitable for sunnier climes. And so I did what I had to and hit the shops.
The girls now have a lovely little holiday wardrobe so I thought I would share some of my favourite purchases with you all. Plus many of the other items that I am still tempted to buy. I will caveat that there is a lot of girly clothing mainly as Molly point blank refuses to wear anything but pink at the moment. I hope it’s only a phase as I am seriously struggling. I can just about get away with another colour if she has a pink top or cardigan but not much else. If I put her in another colour she goes upstairs and gets herself changed. Who knew a four year old could be so strong willed!
I have tried to reign myself in with the spending and I have to keep telling myself that we are only there one week so have tried to pick things that they can wear here should we happen to have any sunshine (I’m ever hopeful). It’s so hard though as there is just too much cuteness!
Travelling
For the plane journeys the girls will be going for comfort with leggings and t-shirts with a little jumper or cardigan. This way we can quickly take a layer off when we land if it is warm.
The Little Bird leggings are some of my favourites and I buy them most seasons. They are a really nice style with a cuffed ankle and turn over waistband and last really well. The range of Little Bird T-shirts this season is great too. This fish print is a particular favourite. They are unisex so ideal for any little ones.
Alice lives in the Next loose trousers most of the year and at the moment we have bought some aptly named Traveller pants for her!
Then we can chuck on a cardigan or hoody for the plane and we are set.
Swimwear
Given that pretty much every day will be spent at the beach or in the pool the girls needed quite a few swimsuits between them.
Molly has got the most amazing bright pink mermaid swimsuit from M&S which she adores. Apparently it helps her swim better!
She will also be sporting a super cute pom pom number from Monsoon.
I am a big fan of the pretty designs from Boden especially their hotchpotch designs. Molly has a little floral and striped swimsuit and I couldn’t resist this sweet boat print for Alice.
As a last minute purchase we decided to go for some long sleeved rash vests and matching shorts from Boden just in case it happens to be boiling or to protect their little shoulders. I figure that they can just wear the top over their swimsuits if they don’t need the shorts on as well.
I also love the Next swimwear at the moment and am considering this little yellow tankini set for Alice. I like that the top is nice and long so feels like a one piece but figure it will be easier for toilet stops than a soggy swimsuit.
Beach Cover Ups
For the daytime I am opting for easy throw on items that can be used for lunchtime or walks to the beach.
I’ve picked up a couple of the three packs of shorts and vests from Next as they can mix and match and they are a nice comfy jersey. I obviously went for the pineapple and palm tree prints!
I love playsuits and although not practical for recently potty trained Alice I will be purchasing a couple of Molly. I adore this ice lolly one from M&S and I can’t resist the fun fish print towelling one from Little Bird. Towelling playsuits just remind me of my childhood holidays so she had to have one!
You can’t go far wrong with these little summer dresses from H&M. Only £2.99! Absolute bargain and ideal for slipping on over swimsuits. We have both the strawberry and candy striped versions.
I’ve also had my eye on a few pairs of the jersey bubble shorts from Gap. They do them in a range of colours and they are often on offer. I also figure that they could wear a cute little top with them in the evening if they prefer. I’m loving the striped version and matching animal t-shirt.
The Next 2 for £10 items have also been great. I really like the neon shorts and fun charcoal T-shirt. I also purchased a couple of the tunic dresses as they will be good for holiday but also go with leggings back in the UK. Molly has the strawberry print and Alice has the watermelon.
I also grabbed a couple of the Boden towelling zip up tops when they had some recent offers on as they will be good by the pool and they will definitely wear them on the beach in Devon if not!
And I’m pretty sure they need this Parrot poncho!
Evening
I love having an excuse to get a bit more glammed up in the evenings on holiday. I’m not talking all out sequins but it’s nice to have a change from the daytime beachwear. Molly especially loves dressing up and with an obligatory kids disco at the hotel (help me!!) it is a great excuse to get them a few nicer outfits.
This pink dress from Next is a firm favourite so far. It has a soft jersey striped top and pretty linen skirt. I’m very tempted to buy Alice the green palm tree version. You will probably notice that poor Alice get’s no pink clothing to try and balance out all the pink in the house at the moment!
I find the Boden T-shirt dresses super comfy and they wash and wear incredibly well. The girls have had them most years so far and pretty much live in them. I can chuck a pair of leggings underneath if it’s cooler too.
I also bought these sweet little seersucker dresses from H&M. They are adorable and only £6.99.
I love a cute shorts set and have this little shorts and camisole from Accessorize. I love the bug prints on it. I actually love a lot of the Monsoon and Accessorize clothes this summer. So many gorgeous prints and colours.
On the shorts front this safari romper from Gap is just ace!
Finally I adore these simple styled items from Zara. The cheesecloth dress would be ideal for day or evening and this knotted strappy dress is just the cutest. It will be great back in this country with a little t shirt underneath.
Lightweight Cover Ups
I’m not sure quite how warm it will be in the evenings so I’m thinking the girls may need a couple of cardigans or little jumpers just in case.
This boat appliqué cardigan from Next is really sweet and may already be in my virtual basket!
Zara always has a great range of knitwear and this star jumper looks lightweight enough to pop over a dress or shorts if it gets chilly. I also love this alphabet print cardigan. Oh and how good is this animal sweatshirt?
Accessories
I’m not going overboard on the accessories but I figure hats and sunglasses are an essential.
Loving the hit of neon on this John Lewis Trilby and I think some little fishermans hats will be needed for Alice. I’m going for a two pack as thinking she may well loose them!!
Ombre is a favourite of mine so these sunglasses may be a last minute purchase although H&M has some great sunglasses for a couple of pounds.
Oh and we can’t not mention these epic pineapple sunglasses from Accessorize that Miss Mabel has been sporting!
I think perhaps I better stop shopping now! Unless you all have anything great that I have missed? Oh and any top tips of good summer clothes for me? That is something I am really struggling on.
Presumably you’ll be doing a boys holiday post as well (unless I’ve already missed it?) as I’ve just started looked for our holiday in June and can find no inspiration! Girls have so much more choice! Everything for boys is either stripes or nautical themed!!
Of course! It will be coming up soon, just too much to fit in one post. The little bird tshirts are good to look at and a couple of the Zara cardigans and jumper included in this post are actually from the ‘boys’ section of the website but as with a lot of Zara stuff is great for everyone. We will make sure we get a super Dooper inspiring collection together for you x
I’m ahead of the curve as we ummm….have most of these already.
I’ve sent some of it back (the £2.99 stripe dresses from H & M weren’t as nice in the flesh IMO) but we kept the seersucker in sky blue (it also comes in a pink). We also love the Gap bubble shorts. Slightly upset that the safari romper is from Gap as I find their sizing short for my long bodied slim fit daughter. We’ve got loads from Next actually as I think their summer stuff is nailing it. Less shorts and t-shirts, more play suits and rompers here.
Having been abroad last year, and for anyone with a baby, I’d say more cover ups and long sleeves. We had some gorgeous cotton loose fit blouses from Zara which she needed as a cover up. Also rash vests over swimming costumes. It was too hard to keep her out the sun/pool and then slap on the sun cream every 2 minutes. The long sleeved option gives you more protection.
Can we also talk about shoes? What do we need for summer? Some sandals, although the Clarks ones are all hideous and pink and plastic and maybe some soft canvas shoes?
Also you have a giant pink inflatable boat for the pool yes?
Yay, love that you have lots of this already! I just figured the H&M dresses would be great for the day and don’t care if they get ruined at that price. I am so with you on the Next clothing. I love it all this summer and could buy so much from there. I’m hoping we have some sunny weather here so that I have an excuse to make some more purchases. I love playsuits and rompers but have been debating how easy they would be for toilet stops for the girls.
I do think I definitely need to add a few more long sleeved tops. Blouses are a great idea so I’ll go and take a peek.
Guess what we have coming up next week….. summer shoes!!! I have seriously struggled and so far those are the missing parts of the holiday wardrobe.
Um, need to get on with the inflatables I think. Molly did request a pink rubber ring but I’m thinking a giant flamingo would be good!
xxx
I know what you mean about the price of the H & M stuff but I’m trying to buy less and buy better (I cannot believe I’m having this conversation about TODDLER CLOTHES FFS) as we had a lot of stuff that just looked shabby by the end of last year.
These are our next finds this season – both rompers are hidden in the swimwear section which is such a waste (Next: SORT OUT YOUR CATALOGUE)

I am also IN LOVE with these from the Little White Company – I love how the dungarees cross over at the back. A bit like the Zara one but far more age appropriate IMO: http://www.thewhitecompany.com/the-little-white-company/childrens-new-in/chambray-dungarees–chambray-(15yrs)/
Inflatable wise, we had this one in pink. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Inflatable-Float-Beach-Shade-Swimming-Canopy/dp/B00EVVGPRQ/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1459845383&sr=8-4&keywords=cars+inflatable.
I liked the fact it came with a canopy but I guess its less important with older children.
Consider yourself enabled people.
Do you think they could just make all of these things in adult size?! I will be stalking your Instagram to see cute pics of the girls ricking these awesome threads. They will be the envy of all their pool party friends!xx
I know. Why can’t I find anything that I like for myself? I could buy for them all day! xxx
So much CUTE Lottie!
I really need to get cracking with Anabelle’s summer wardrobe before the poor girl out grows her current wardrobe & has nothing that fits! .
So far I’ve brought this stripe dress & straw hat!
Get shopping lorna!! Love the hat! Xx
Will there be a follow-up post to your choosing a holiday one where you fill us in on what you decided in the end?! Hope so….
Yep, of course! Coming soon to a blog near you! Xx
Waaaaah WHY don’t I have a girl to put in this stuff! I have sent links to my sister for her little girl – I’m sure her credit card will thank me 🙂
I saw the blue seersucker in H&M and am desperate for it myself – how gorgeous? Love the safari print and the next fruity ones too. Gorgeous!
Looking forward to the boys, though it’s never as lovely as the girls selection is it?
For sandals I love white Birkenstocks for girls or boys in summer and they go with everything.
I’d love that dress too! Maybe we should start a petition?!
We will try and find some super lovely boys stuff for you.
Xxx
Those pineapple shorts and vests from Next are definitely on my summer wish list. Also loving the safari romper. I’ve already started buying Zoe’s wardrobe for our summer holiday as well – I find you have to get in early if you want the good stuff. Sunuva had a sale on their swimsuits not long ago and I got one reduced from £42 to £12, bargain! Asda has some nice stuff at the minute, that is so cheap I don’t care what happens to it. I’ve bought these fruity numbers: http://direct.asda.com/george/kids/playsuits-jumpsuits/watermelon-playsuit/G005324319,default,pd.html and this http://direct.asda.com/george/kids/tops-t-shirts/melon-print-t-shirt/G005323983,default,pd.html. I also picked up a watermelon beach towel for a bargainous £5! Pity I can’t find nice items to replenish my own summer wardrobe at the same rate… 😉
I need a watermelon towel. Pretty sure it is an essential. Those playsuits are great. Going to check out George now. I’m exactly the same, why are the no nice clothes for us?! x
Fantastic post! So many lovely ideas. We are off on a sunny holiday shortly with our 14 month old little girl. Any suggestions for footwear? She is walking and is pretty steady on her feet but I am struggling to find cute but supportive options for her. Thank you!
Hi Claire, we have a footwear post coming up shortly so hopefully there will be a few ideas in there for you x
I would recommend Clarke’s doodles Claire. We have a pair for our 19 month old and she loves them (and they can go in the washing machine!!). Orla’s granddad used to manage a Clarke’s and is pretty fussy about what we put on her feet, but he’s happy with them and they’re comfy without socks too!! We currently have these http://www.clarks.co.uk/p/26115846 but they also have more sandally styles! x
I came on specifically to recommend those H&M dresses – we’ve just stocked up on them too. Juliet had them last summer and they washed and wore fantastically, we’ve just replaced with the next size up for this year.
Both the kids are also a big fan of the Boden beach towel kaftans for sticking on when they get out of the pool/sea – they come in some great patterns and are a good additional layer particularly around 4.30pm when you have to haul them out for the last time and it’s not quite as warm as it has been for the rest of the day!
They are great value aren’t they?
I do love a towelling Kaftan. We had some from Little Bird last year but they haven’t released them yet this year so may be hitting Boden I think. They wore them every day last year in Devon as they are just so great for throwing on as you say. x
Some really cute options here……love the little Zara cardi especially!
I might be in th minority but I think little boys seem to have nicer options and am constantly drawn to ‘the boys side,’ away from the sea of pink and sparkle!
Don’t get me wrong, I love a set of fairy wings as much as the next person, but find so much stuff much too girly for my tastes.
Boots Mini club especially has some really lovely boys the things, where as the girls is, in my opinion, very dated and just not on the same level as the boys…..
The grass is always greener, huh!?
Oooh, I must check out Boots. I haven’t looked there for ages. I do know what you mean about boys v girls (the Zara cardi is actually from their ‘boys’ collection!). I would pick quite different clothes I think but Molly is such a girly girl. I like little dresses and so on but find so many of the embellishments and sparkles in a lot of shops just a bit much! It’s as though they try and pop every possible jewel on them they can find. I try to find a nice balance where I can and opt for the slightly plainer pink outfits and then pop a a few stripes or plains to balance it all out. That’s if Molly will let me! Luckily Alice hasn’t become so opinionated yet! Off to check out Boots now x
I’m sure when Martha gets old enough to have an opinion about clothes (apart from not wanting to put them on!) I will be in the same pink/Peppa Pig/ Disney boat as you! ?
Ha ha! If only they stayed little forever! x
