I am a big fan of the babygro. With both my girls they probably spent the first 3 months of their lives exclusively in babygros and slept in them at nighttime long after that. As cute as all the little outfits out there are, believe me when I say you do not want to be shoehorning tiny newborn legs and wriggly arms in to that sweet blouse and dungarees combo.
You want to go for comfort and ease and most importantly something that washes well. They will be washed a LOT. You will probably need at least 9 to start off with when baby is born and the same, if not a few more, in each size afterwards.
Despite the fact that I am advocating the purchase of a lot of babygros they don’t actually have to be plain and boring. I highly recommend the packs of 3 that most stores sell and I’ve popped some of my favourites below. I also think there is nothing sweeter than a tiny baby in a plain white babygro. I will say here that perhaps buy some cheap white babygros as they don’t really stay white for long!
In addition there are so many beautiful designs on the babygros that it is worth getting one or two slightly more expensive ones for special occasions and visits.
Next
Next was my go to for sleepsuits. I found they came up on the more generous size than others which suited me and meant they lasted longer. Fantastic quality and they came through the wash brilliantly. The prints and designs were some of my favourite and this season is no exception.
For little girls I love this sweet bear design in pinks and creams or this bright woodland deer set in red and blue is super sweet.
This set in oatmeal and grey features cute little beavers and bears in a funky design. Another great graphic design is this black and white milk bottle set.
John Lewis
John Lewis always have a great selection of designs and their packs of 3 are always a winner. I love the woodland designs that they have at the minute. Or this grey star set is a perfect gender neutral option.
These cute owl designs by Little Green Radicals are just the sweetest and the organic cotton means they are super soft on baby’s skin.
Polarn O Pyret do some amazingly fun prints in funky colours. This bat design has a zip front rather than fiddly poppers making it perfect for a quick change and the panda print is equally cute.
Joules
My girls always had one Joules print babygro that they had been given as a gift. The prints are always so bright and cheerful and the quality of the fabric is lovely. Really thick and washes so well. They do lovely designs for boys or girls. I currently love the baby bird or flopsy bunny designs. For little boys and farmyard design or this rugby playing fox are lots of fun.
Marks and Spencer
Marks and Spencer have seriously upped their style stakes at the moment and I was walking through the other day wishing that I could still squeeze the girls in to all the baby stuff. The designs and prints are just gorgeous. I can highly recommend a peep at the whole collection.
For standard babygros you can’t go far wrong with their duckling print. They have a whole host of co-ordinating items such as blankets and hats which are equally lovely.
For something a little bit special these Autograph Velour sleepsuits are utterly gorgeous. I loved velour babygros as they always felt extra snuggly and the sweet floral detailing or chequered car option are adorable.
Gap
Charlotte is a big fan of Gap for Mabel and their babygro selection is great at the moment. For the colder months this filled sleepsuit would be super cosy and I also love this bear print design.
Zara
Zara have their usual great range of prints for kids like this bottle print or little pink seal and star number. Their babygros come with a back opening fastening which can be handy for nappy changes. I’d be interested to see what anyone else thinks of these designs with the poppers on the reverse as I sometimes found them a bit tricky but had friends who swore by them.
Mothercare
Mothercare have a great selection of babygros from multipacks to something a little prettier.
For the monochrome lovers this three pack of bear sleepsuits has a fantastic print.
This soft white stars and dreams sleepsuit looks adorable.
I am a big fan of the Little Bird range and couldn’t resist including this little gnome babygro. Just look at their little faces! And the other prints are equally bright and fun. This one even has unicorns on it.
Sainsburys
When I was pregnant I would often nip in to Sainsburys on my lunch break and found myself stocking up on babygros and bodysuits and it seems the rest of the team are also big Sainsburys fans for the littles. They regularly have 20% off which make these ideal for extra’s or for those first sizes when you don’t know if you need tiny baby, newborn or 0-3!
They have some great 3 packs at the moment and this Totem print set is a favourite for little boys or this bright elephant print set would make for cheerful bedtimes.
For a fun babygro this bear face design is just the best. It says it is for little boys but I would definitely have put the girls in this and a bargain at £8. And this fleecy bear would be super cosy. I’d often put the girls in a thin fleecy sleepsuit for walks in the pram on a milder day or even for daytime naps in the cot once they got bigger.
The White Company
As you would expect with The White Company the prices are a little bit more spendy but the quality is so luxurious making them ideal for that one special outfit for your baby to wear. Maybe a coming home outfit or first visit to meet the family. Alice has the sweetest little babygro that my friends had given me before she was born and I loved putting her in it.
They have some beautiful twin packs of babygros or this polar bear design is so sweet and ideal for a boy or a girl.
Do you love babygro’s as much as I do for your littles? Any great buys we should know about?
I also love a babygro. Juliet still sleeps in them at 9 months and they make her look angelic! Seconded that the multi packs from Next and John Lewis are brilliant for design and they wash really well. I never cared how something washed until I had a baby..
It’s funny how you start to think of washing techniques isn’t it? I will say that I’ve got a lot more lax as they’ve got older!! x
There’s nothing cuter than a baby in a gro ☺️ Just a comment on sizing, I’ve found m&s to be generous and next and sainsburys to be fairly snug. Cath Kidston do cute gros and I’d echo John Lewis too for lovely ones. My favourite came from JL for newborn with little grey sheep on. Adorable!
Next is definitely more generous isn’t it but funny as I’ve found M&S smaller whereas most of my friends think they are big. Perhaps my children are rather tall! x
I liked Next for my now 3 year old! Good value and washed really well. I also used to get multipacks from Tesco which were made of thinner material but were so cheap I didn’t care at all if they got pooed on!! Used to get through so many…I’m now 20 weeks with my second and have bought nothing new yet I think a cute baby gro might be purchased this week!
I did a few Tesco shops too for the first sizes. As you said not as thick but great for not worrying about. x
My little wears exclusively white babygrows. I love them. I don’t ordinarily dress her in bright colours / patterns, preferring to keep her in neutral or pale colours but I have bought a red and white stripey number for Christmas Eve. It reminds me of the baby in Labyrinth!
In order to keep them white I pop a Milton sterilising tablet in the wash with them every now and again, works a treat!
Oh I loved the Labyrinth! Top tip on the Milton x
I can remember buying a few ‘outfits’ before my little boy arrived, ha! Little was I to know that he would indeed spend every day and night for the first 3-4 months in a baby grow. We had lots from Next and I was surprised at the quality/durability of the supermarket baby grows. He had one or two JoJo Mama Bebe ones which were unbelievably soft and super cute that he wore for special occasions like Christmas Day. I think they were about £15 each! – but it was nice to have a few special ones x
That’s good thing about babygros, even the nice one’s don’t seem that expensive. Don’t worry, you aren’t alone in the outfit stakes. Lots of people do it! x
: )
One thing I never quite understood though, was baby gros with the popper fastenings on the back?? I could not change a nappy and then manhandle a new born in order to be able to do the gro up at the back, I thought I’d break him!x
I love jojomamanbebe for single babygros. They are lovely and thick and wash well. I bought loads in the sale Before Felix was born.
I’ve also been impressed with Boots mini club for multi pack gros too. Wash well and generously sized!
I’ve heard really good things on JoJo so one to add to the list x
I love baby gros, they are adorable! Silvia will wear them until they don’t do her size if I have anything to do with it!
A word on Mothercare though- I loved their designs and their sizing is great for S but they washed poorly- anything with a print pattern faded quickly- tops too. So buy a solid colour if you can.
My littles slept in gros till at least 1 and a half I think. So cute at bedtime. Next go up to quite big sizes x
The White Company are my all time favourite and was my choice for my little’s first outfit. But as you say, a bit too speedy for everyday! My favourite by a long shot and not mentioned above were Mamas and Papas multipacks. I loved the designs and they washed really well. You could often find them on sale too 🙂
Oooh, I forgot about M&P. Great recommendation x
Another vote for the Mamas and Papas multipacks. Pricier than other brands but 3 for 2 so worked out to be not so bad. John Lewis came up big for us and washed well.
My lg lived in babygros for her first 3 months too – despite all the pretty outfits we were given, she just seemed so much more comfy in her gro and it was so much easier to get on and off! My favourites are M&S, Next and Jojo Maman Bebe. Gap also occasionally have zip up ones which are super handy. In terms of supermarket cheapies, Asda is my go-to. At 11 months, we’re still a fan of sleeping in the gro and have a number of Christmas ones currently in rotation. As she’s now cruising, I like the ones with grippy stuff on the feet and wish there were more out there.
Christmas gro’s are the best. Good luck with the cruising xx
