I’ve been looking forward to buying Elle’s first pair of walking shoes for a LONG time. My Mum still has my first pair of shoes in their little box at home, an adorable pair of patent leather burgundy t-bars and I’d love to find Elle something similar – very classic and traditional, but I’m totally overwhelmed by the amount of choice and out here and I’m worried that what I want, won’t necessarily be the best fit or style for Elle’s growing feet. I’m hoping some you of Mummies with older babies will be able to advise…what are the best first walking shoes for babies?
The Right Fit
I know that I should keep Elle out of shoes for as long as possible and let her walk bare foot where possible, which is fine at home, but lets be realistic here, it’s Winter, it’s cold and it’s miserable, and the streets aren’t particularly clean. So my first port of call, when she’s properly walking, will be Clarks to get her feet measured. My sister used to work there and likes to remind me how important this is ๐ But once I know what size she is what style do I go for?
Classic
There is nothing smarter than a pair of navy leather Startrite shoes. These are the perfect smart, unisex shoe and I know that they would go with just about everything in Elle’s wardrobe, but would they be practical for dog walks?!
Sensible
With that in mind, should I opt for a trainer style shoe from Bobux? These look perfect for first steps – very comfortable and supportive, but not too heavy like some other trainer type shoes I’ve seen. (And they come in blue too).
Freestyle
So these Xplorer Freestyle shoes look just like a pair of climbing shoes that Matt owns – which are amazing for clambering around over rocks, so I can imagine Elle would find them very easy to move around in. The trouble is they don’t look as nice as other ones ๐ But if they are going to be the best for supporting her growing feet – then I’m sold! (Also in Navy here). And they can also go in the washing machine, which I can imagine is very useful.
Moccasins
There’s nothing more adorable than little ones toddling around in moccasins and I love the selection at Amy & Ivor, they are soft structured and made from breathable leather so are kind to developing feet. I love the idea that the little one can feel the floor beneath them which helps them to learn more about their own balance and movement, by being less restricted.
Warmer Weather
Elle is cruising very confidently now, doing lots of freestanding and has attempted to take some steps in the last few days – but from speaking to other parents, babies can be at this stage for a while. So should I wait? Should I hold off until the Spring when she can wear sweet little leather sandals like these Clarks ones with a dress, or little canvas animal print shoes like these ones?
I’m just a bit confused really. What are the best first shoes for babies? How long did it take for your little one to walk properly after cruising?
I’d really appreciate your help!! Fern xxx
Another perfectly timed post -my little one took her first steps (to try and grab the Christmas tree) yesterday!
I am hoping to leave her shoe free for a little longer, as I presume it will still be a while before she’s walking outside and with the price of kids shoes, I want her to get as much wear out of them as possible.
Navy T bars are my favourite, but will be interested to see what other Mums recommend!

Oh gosh I know Jane, we were talking at our meeting the other day about the cost of kids shoes – so I think I’ll definitely be holding out for as long as I can!
Congratulations on your little one’s first steps!! How sweet that she was trying to get to the Christmas tree too ๐

Ahhh I know what you mean, it’s a bit of a minefield isn’t it! We got my daughters first shoes last month, we went to a local independent shop but they measure like Clarks and are knowledgable on little ones feet etc. I hate to sound shallow but I was a bit gutted at how ugly some of the first shoes are ? The lady advised going for ‘pre walkers’ at this stage as my little girl was taking steps but not confidently walking yet and her toes were still scrunching etc. With pre-walkers they’re just less rigid so they can still feel the ground. We got these… https://www.startriteshoes.com/amelia-blue-girls-t-bar-pre-walkers?gclid=CN3QjbaM5ckCFSoEwwodYxsHyg
I love love love the Amy&Ivor moccasins and am very tempted to buy…. Just a bit put off by the price in case she grows out of them fast! My little one was furniture walking for a good 6-8 weeks before taking steps on her own. Once she started though so she trying all the time and it wasn’t long after that that we got her some shoes for out and about. In the house she is always barefoot! X
Oh I like those ones Sarah – such a lovely colour.
It sounds like I’ve probably got a month or so then – will wait for the craziness of Christmas to be over and then take her to get her feet measured in January. It’s funny because my Mum and Matt’s mum both thought she’d walk before Christmas, but my intuition is telling me she’ll be cruising around for a little bit longer – her legs don’t quite look strong and sturdy enough yet if that makes sense.
I’ve been resisting the Amy & Ivor mocs for the same reason, but I suppose once I know what size she is, I could put them on her birthday list for the Grandparents ๐ x
Ahhhhh we purchased Hector’s first pair of shoes last weekend from Start-rite. He is currently a 4.5 G which I was surprised about because I thought he would take after Ste and I and have narrow feet. We opted for these – http://www.startriteshoes.com/charles-navy-blue-suede-lace-up-classics –
Yes I know SUEDE?! What was this mother thinking? But actually since he’s not running at full pelt just yet I figured I could probably get away with a nice pair of shoes rather than choosing a pair that I don’t like but would probably be more suitable for when he does. He’ll grow out of them before I can blink anyway. Several friends have commented that they wouldn’t be able to trust their kid with laces but he doesn’t seem to have figured that he can undo them yet. Long may that last!
Aww so smart Lolly, I can just see Hector trotting round the botanical gardens in those! And I think suede is fine as long as it’s not wet!! It’s lovely and soft for his feet too ๐
And yes, hopefully by the time he figures out the laces, he’ll have grown out of them anyway!

Really recommend some soft leather slippers (inch blue or Bobux) and some stonz boots for over the top of you need a weatherproof layer. When she’s properly walking unaided and wanting to walk outdoors then barefoot shoes are brilliant – brands like bobux step up, or pediped etc. Livie and Luca website is good. Badly fitting shoes or too stiff soles can cause all sorts of problems. My little one took about 6 months from first cruising to walking unaided. (But he was quite slow and cautious!)
Thanks Sal, this is really helpful. I’ve heard of Stonz and they sound like a wise investment given the type of walks we go on with the dog. The Livie & Luca site is great – they have some adorable shoes!
I have a feeling mine is not going to be so cautious, she’s giving me heart palpitations a lot at the moment! It’s when she stands up from squatting and tries to move that terrifies me…

We got my daughter’s first shoes a month ago. She’d been properly walking for about five weeks when we went – my father-in-law used to manage a Clarks and feels VERY strongly about babies wearing shoes when they don’t need to! His advice would be that it’s not only important to get the right size, but also the right shoe – apparently my little has a very high instep, so very few of the shoes would fit her and we tried lots until the Clarks assistant and Grandad were both happy!!!
I did worry beforehand that we were going to fall out, as I hate the fact that the majority of shoes for little girls feature at least one of glitter, pink or animal ears, and I rejected a lot of pairs on this basis, but thankfully the pair that fit best were these adorable Dorothy-esque shoes – http://www.clarks.co.uk/p/26110250 – I wanted them in navy, but they’re totally sold out (something I think Clarks would do well to bear in mind as they design yet another pink sparkly pair!!). However, they’re not that practical for outside walks and stuff over winter, and Grandad says she’s not ready for wellies yet ๐ I am looking forward to spring and a pair of the canvas doodles, they’re definitely less sparkly and more to my taste (still can’t guarantee she won’t have a pair that are officially for boys though!!).
Orla was cruising for weeks and weeks, months probably, but decided not to bother with any wobbly first steps, and went straight to walking across the room in one go, and hasn’t looked back!!
Those are lovely Amy!
And I love that Orla just walked across the room when she was ready, they are such funny little creatures aren’t they?!
(It would be really helpful to know when they are allowed to wear wellies? What does your Father in Law say? Thank you!) x
We were told we needed cruisers/pre-walkers until she was walking about 50 steps unaided. She’s been taking cruising for the last six months and has taken a few steps daily for the last two months but still hasn’t taken off properly. She really just doesn’t seem that bothered but it also doesn’t help that our house is so small she can walk from one side of the room to the other in just those few steps!
We have the start-rite Amelia in Teal too like Sarah. The only downside is that they’re a suede-y soft fabric and now absolutely covered in spilt hot chocolate.
Our house is small too Becca and I feel like I spend some days just running around in circles after Elle!! It’s like she’s found this whole new level of movement at the moment. I may go for some cruisers then, as at home I’m happy for her to be barefoot, but not really when we’re out and about meeting friends – and she won’t sit in her buggy quietly anymore!!
Those teal ones are lovely, I bet they look very cute with tights and a Winter dress or dungarees x
I *totally* second the Boblux recommendation. My daughter has a pair and they are brilliant and don’t seem to mark or scuff (!). We too go to a local independent, we had a very bad experience in Clarks that has put me off for life! The lady who owns our local kids shoe shop has been there for 25 years, has a wealth of knowledge and is so so helpful. I always try to buy at least one neutral pair that goes with everything then maybe something more colour specific. I also totally love the brand called Little Mary…. Not a speck of glitter in sight! Edie has been walking since she was 10 and a half months and seem to be off straight away… It’s sooo scary, but she’s got some strong legs on her now. Good luck with Elle’s next adventure! X
Ahh that’s the thing with high street stores, isn’t it…so hit and miss. Neutral is a good idea – then you can the most wear out of them!
Little Mary shoes are gorgeous, just googled them – they have some cute tan sandals that would be lovely for the summer!! Thanks Danielle ๐ x
(Love the name Edie too!)
For my daughter I felt it was important to keep her as close to bare foot as possible so we went for Amy & Ivor mocs for indoor and light outdoor wear (it was summer though) and then for a pair of Little Paris shoes by Bobux which is a lovely Mary Jane style and barefoot friendly – a wider toe box, no heel and flexible sole – unlike a lot of ‘first’ shoes to my surprise. I also really wanted something really classic and although not exactly what I was after, they turned out to be the perfect compromise.
Hi to you all,
I wanted to share with you a brand I found recently, I got 5 for my girl. They offer the best baby shoes. Super healthy & very easy to put on. If you are interested take a look at their online store https://walkkings.com/
We buy both of our kidโs shoes from Start Rite (www.startriteshoes.com) and always have done. The kids love them and never complain about they’re feet hurting and the shoe last despite being put through very rigorous paces.
