One of the best presents I received at Christmas was actually from Hector; he’d thoughtfully taken it upon himself to treat me to a ‘life-saving’ massage after hearing me complain on an hourly basis just how much my back was hurting from lugging him around as well as all his baby bag essentials.
Have you ever noticed just how much ‘stuff’ us parents of littles have to carry around with us on a daily basis? Clearly my body had! Only a couple of days after Christmas I put my back out and Ste said enough was enough. We sat down and really evaluated what was necessary, what Hector really didn’t need any more and swopped all the essentials over into a rucksack rather than the nappy bag and I only wish that we’d done it sooner.
It’s so much handier, mobility wise, and all the little pockets on the outside and inside make it a million times easier to get to anything. Plus Ste is more than happy to carry it as well as Hector which saves my poor back from seizing up again.
Considering we’re a nosy bunch we wondered what you folks keep in your baby bags? Do you have any handy tips? We’ll show you ours if you show us yours….
Lolly
Since I’m currently in that transition stage between no longer needing as much of your typical baby bag paraphernalia and not quite being able to relinquish the bag completely as mentioned above, our baby bag essentials list has changed somewhat in the last month or so.
Alongside the staple spare couple of nappies and wipes and extra dummy, we cart along a spare hat for this cold weather and mittens too. Hector inevitably will pull them off at some point so this means that we have back-ups in case something goes walkabout. Hector does need to be kept entertained otherwise he creates havoc in his wake so we keep a couple of lightweight toys and books in the bag which we swop around on a weekly basis to keep things fresh. He’s currently loving this Thomas the Tank Engine train my mum bought him for Christmas and the book Hairy Maclary which makes him laugh and therefore us in turn.
For refreshment we pack in his beaker, some chopped up fruit – usually grapes and mango – and some cereal bars from the kids range at M&S. Daddy sometimes has a bite too 😉

With a 4 year old and a 2 year old I stopped lugging a nappy bag around a long time ago. Instead we have a little rucksack for the girls but inevitably this gets left behind/forgotten on short trips out or dashes to the supermarket. As a result I always have a couple of handy items stashed away in the bottom of my bag. It’s not always the best when rummaging through my Mulberry during a meeting and I accidentally pull out a pair of peppa pig knickers but that has become the norm. Not for me I hasten to add but for the recently potty trained Alice. Just in case.
I will always have a pack of tissues or travel sized wet wipes as for some reason my children always have runny noses, sticky fingers, felt tip hands or all of the above. I can also normally muster up a few snacks from the depths and try to opt for long shelf life items as there is nothing worse than a mushy banana. Nairns Oat cake biscuits are my favourite. For me as well in case I just need an energy pick me up.
There is also an assortment of hair slides and necklaces that seem to make their way in in case Molly feels the need to accessorise her outfit.

I’m am so lucky with the boys being older that I can literally get them to pop their own shoes and coats on and tell them to be by the door in 5 mins and they’re there with no help. (It’s probably more like 10 minutes after they’ve finished arguing about god only knows what!) I also thought I’d got away with not having to carry around the kitchen sink any more until our gorgeous little lady arrived. Now it’s back to nappies, wipes, juice, snacks and usually her Baby Annabell.
Since I’ve had a bag again, the boys have begun to sneak in their items too; instead of them carrying their own rucksack I end up with their tablet, phone, handheld games consoles and possibly an action figure or too amongst all of Anabelle’s baby essentials. My secret weapon in my bag that comes in handy for all three children though is a trusty tube of Savlon cream. Perfect for all the scrapes at football or the park and perfect for me too if my hands need a little TLC and I’ve forgotten my hand cream (which is usually the case being a Mum, you remember all the kids essentials and forget to sort out your own bits).

I still carry Elle’s nappy bag with me most of the time to be honest, but currently I always have several dribble bibs on hand as there is a constant stream of saliva coming out of her mouth (delightful). Honestly she must soak through about 7 a day!!! Also her water beaker is a definite essential as losing all of that fluid makes her really thirsty. Ahhhh teething!!

It is vital that at all times we have at least one car and one dinosaur. He’s never happier than when he is playing with either of these. We also carry with us a drink (you know how they get unbelievably thirsty at any given point), a small plastic container with grapes and clementines and then also a packet of something, wether that’s rice cakes or something else, kiddie biscuits perhaps.
The most important thing at the moment for us to have in the bag are baby wipes and a change of pants, trousers and socks as we are, on rare occasion, still having some accidents and there is nothing worse than being caught out and not being able to get him changed and dry. Also if we are out for a long walk or somewhere where there may not be direct access to a toilet, we also make sure we always have the travel potty (this has saved my bacon on many a long car journey too). There is a tiny space left for my purse and lip balm.
Some great tips!
I’m currently looking for a changing bag for my impending arrival. I’d like it to be sufficiently stylish when I’m carrying it, but not too girly so my husband will carry it too! If anyone has any suggestions, they will be gratefully received!
Hi Laura,
Have you heard of Tiba & Marl? http://www.tibaandmarl.com/ I’ve just purchased the Raf holdall in black for our impending arrival, which sounds like it will fit the bill for you too. It’s quite large, but I’ve seen friends struggle to find and stuff things into too small changing bags, so thought we’d give this one a go. The Elwood backpack looks good too.

Great tip! I’d love a rucksack that can easily hang on the back of the pram and I think you’ve nailed it! So many changing bags are just too twee for me. Thanks!
Hi Ladies,
Tiba & Marl bags are gorgeous but definitely at the pricey end of the market! If you want a rucksack have a look at Mi Pack, http://www.mi-pac.com/collections/backpacks-rucksacks or for actual changing bags that aren’t twee like Jane says, I really LOVE my Storksak bag. http://www.johnlewis.com/brand/storksak/
Personally I found having an actual nappy bag (rather than a normal handbag) really useful, as the changing mat and all the pockets helped me to be organised.
Happy shopping! x
Just had a quick look and the Raf looks good, thanks for the suggestion. I especially like the floral one…I wonder how far I’ll get trying to convince my husband it isn’t girly?!
I’m eyeing up this Pacapod rucksack for when we have our second… (I’m not even pregnant yet haha) Pretty and functional 🙂 http://www.pacapod.com/hastings-changing-bag-driftwood.html
Oh I love this – especially the stripey ones! I’m a huge bagpack fan, with a dodgy back, I have up on actual hand or shoulder bags a while ago! It definitely has helped my posture, too 🙂
Great tips & advice thanks, I often carry too much in my handbag which then ends up hurting my shoulder & back. Love the rucksack in the photo too, where’s it from?
Hi Mads it was actually a present I bought my husband two Christmases ago – it was from the men’s section at Jigsaw. I think they might still sell them…
I couldn’t find a change bag I liked so just bought a large handbag – it’s an Autograph one so is a nice bit of luxury leather. In terms of essentials – a million muslins and antibacterial hand wipes (for grotty public loos or in the boot of the car nappy changes!)
Yes Victoria! I forgot about the numerous muslins I used to cart around with me! I don’t miss those!
I love my Laessig bag (http://www.johnlewis.com/browse/baby-child/travelling/changing-bags/laessig/_/N-8hdZ1z0vquw) – I use it for work occasionally too when I need to carry a laptop etc and it still looks nearly new after using it for 18 months or so.
I was given this for Christmas! Can’t wait to start using it – looks super cool (not an embroidered cupcake in sight) but really practical, too. Like the fact that you can use it as a shoulder or cross-body bag. It was Charlotte, in fact, whose glowing review of it on Rock My Style persuaded me that I needed it in my life 😉
Ditto!
I have that bag too on Charlottes recommendation! I managed to get it on Amazon with £20 off!
It is proving to be excellent I even have space for a few of my essentials!
I don’t carry much for my 3 year old anymore. Can get away with a drink and a snack and that’s it! I do keep a bag of emergency snacks in the car and also some small toys in case of an impromptu meal out.
I find I need more in summer, suncream, hat, sunglasses etc.
I couldn’t wait to get rid of my large changing bag. At the moment I’m tend to use my old across the body handbag, in which I can fit a water bottle, wipes, a couple of nappies, my purse and the occasional car or seven! I swear my boy knows if one of his set is missing and must insist on carting them all around everywhere we go. I’ve since been given a tiny little bag, which originally had gruffalo books in. He now carries his cars in his bag and I’m back to the essentials. It’s the perfect size for him to put his arm through.
I am waiting for the time when we start potty training and I need to cart around spare pants and trousers. I’ve already got Isaac a little backpack, so will soon need to dig this out. Although I’m sure he’ll fill that with even more cars and probably trains too, haha.

I had just started carrying a normal handbag when I got pregnant with J and used my old JJ Cole bag for a while which I bought when Isabella was 2 (after using a Skip Hop bag when she was a baby) but I found it wasn’t big enough to ferry around all the stuff I needed baby wise and found it hard to find things in it due to the big flaps on the top which totally frustrated me.
I discovered Tiba & Marl too (instagram has a lot to answer for!!) and totally love my Mabel Tote 🙂 it’s still not quite as big as I’d like (width wise) but I don’t think I’ll ever find a bag big enough for everything 😉

Plus it’s a really nice bag for just going out and about on my own, can fit my laptop in there and the little clutch bag you get with it (which I use for nappies / wipes in the day) makes a lovely evening bag!
I thankfully bought it via one of their stockists, Ivy Cabin when they had 25% off so didn’t pay the full price which was a bonus. If you order it through http://www.thismodernlife.com though you get free postage which you don’t through the Tiba & Marl website.
I was tempted by the Laessig bag too but was worried that I’d get it dirty as it was quite a light colour and wasn’t as roomy as would have liked.
So I carry the usual nappies, wipes, bottles, change of clothes, formula, toys, dummies and my purse etc. Thankfully I don’t need that much for Isabella now (especially as she’s at school now) so at weekends just tend to take a separate lunch bag with snacks and the iPad which is a must if we’re eating out as it keeps her occupied and she stays at the table!!
xx
Our pacapod rucksack is amazing for our 4 month year old, fits nicely in the uppababy shopping basket and has separate feeding and changing ‘pods’. So easy to grab whatever you need and there’s space left for blanket, toys etc. The best part is my husband’s more than happy to carry it! I got a cross body Radley which is the perfect size for my purse, phone, keys, sunglasses etc. and if necessary I can carry that, the pacapod and my baby (although I look a bit like a mountaineer) http://www.johnlewis.com/pacapod-picos-changing-bag-black/p969122?sku=232682771&kpid=232682771&s_kenid=cf2777d3-d59b-4d9a-9e03-3a3de469cd88&s_kwcid=403×863014&tmad=c&tmcampid=73
